Thought Experiment | Where’s this all heading?
Away from the froth surrounding debates around Nvidia’s stock price, AI tools that can now control your computer, and claims that AI is making us even more addicted to our screens, this month’s most significant contribution came from Anthropic’s CEO. In Machines of Loving Grace - a 15,000 word essay - Dario Amodei pointed out that 2026 could be a tipping point in AI. By which he means its intelligence may exceed Nobel Prize winners, solve hitherto impossible maths problems, write high quality novels and operate autonomously on long-term tasks.
Whilst these capabilities may exist in 2026, we might conclude their adoption will take at least two years. So the impact of Dario’s ‘Powerful AI’ might not be felt in our everyday until 2028. However, it does pose the question, ‘Where’s this all heading?’
Dario reckons this level of AI will compress a century of scientific progress into a single decade. Ray Kurzweil sees us starting to merge with machines shortly afterwards. Where, exactly, does this leave the human? The truth is no one knows. And many are critical of Dario’s analysis.
