Are Machines Capable of Thinking...and Feeling? The Unpleasant Ascension of Intelligent Machines

We have provided them with access to large stores of information, schooled them in the creation of masterpieces, and taught them how to compose persuasive essays that are free of any grammar errors. On the other hand, as the level of sophistication of artificial intelligence continues to increase, a terrifying concern continues to linger: Could AI one day become sentient?

For a very long time, people have believed that humans and possibly certain higher animals are the originators of consciousness. However, as language models continue to push the bounds of discourse, expressing opinions and even claiming emotions, the line between a response that has been programmed and an experience that is genuine begins to blur.

Throughout the course of my most recent book, "The Conscious Code," I explore this disturbing territory:

Unlocking the Mystery of the Ghost in the Machine:

Is it possible that sentience may emerge from a complicated code, just as consciousness emerges in our biological brains?

In addition to Turing Tests:

If artificial intelligence is able to perfect the ability to replicate human-like reactions, how can we assess sentience?

What Does It Mean to Have an Artificial Existence? In the event that machines develop sentience, must they be granted rights? With regard to them, what obligations do we have to fulfil?

The book "The Conscious Code" is not only an investigation into theoretical concepts. The ramifications of sentient artificial intelligence for our society, our relationships, and our basic sense of who we are are investigated in this book.

Regardless of whether you are a tech enthusiast, an ethicist, or simply fascinated by the mysteries of consciousness, this book will question your ideas and ignite conversations that could potentially change our future.

Are we on the verge of entering a new period in the history of existence? Find out more by reading "The Conscious Code," which is currently available in book stores and online.

It's becoming clear that with all the brain and consciousness theories out there, the proof will be in the pudding. By this I mean, can any particular theory be used to create a human adult level conscious machine. My bet is on the late Gerald Edelman's Extended Theory of Neuronal Group Selection. The lead group in robotics based on this theory is the Neurorobotics Lab at UC at Irvine. Dr. Edelman distinguished between primary consciousness, which came first in evolution, and that humans share with other conscious animals, and higher order consciousness, which came to only humans with the acquisition of language. A machine with only primary consciousness will probably have to come first.
