Checking the paper published in April 6, 2023 in "Nature Machine Intelligence" Journal, scientists from the Ohio State University describe the machine learning new model that Optimizes sepsis treatment timing and brings support to physicians in decision making process.
The model uses AI to determine, with minimum error tolerance, when to administer antibiotics to patients with a suspected case of sepsis.
Timing is the most important element in the treatment process because absence of medical support when the body responds to an infection, can rapidly lead to organ failure. The detection of symptoms like fever, increasing heart rate, low blood pressure, and breathing problems can mislead doctors on the right timing of applying spectrum antibiotics. It is the first line of defense that typically requires a medical intervention before bacterial infection could be confirmed by the lab.
The machine learning model, basing on patient's vital signs, previous lab results and risk-related demographic data, suggested by the scientists, can consider these uncertainties and time pressure.
