Transforming Automotive Design with Machine Learning and CFD
Aerodynamic performance is more critical than ever, especially as electric vehicles (EVs) become mainstream. A 10% improvement in aerodynamics can increase an EV’s range by approximately 5%—a key advantage in a competitive market. Achieving this requires constant collaboration between design and aerodynamic teams, traditionally involving hundreds of design iterations and thousands of CFD simulations over the years.
Enter Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning. Advanced AI techniques like Graph Neural Networks (GNN) are streamlining CFD workflows, allowing for faster, more efficient simulations that generate near-instant results.
We explored how Machine Learning transforms vehicle proportion studies in a recent study using NAVASTO’s NAVPACK AI software on an AeroSUV model in ELEMENTS. Historically, such studies involved morphing vehicle features, such as overhangs and roof height, and running time-consuming simulations. However, with AI, manufacturers can now analyze sensitivity to aerodynamic forces and optimize vehicle geometry in real-time, drastically reducing the need for physical testing.
The study achieved impressive accuracy by training AI models on just 110 simulations, with over 95% correlation for drag and lift predictions. This breakthrough enables engineers to explore more design iterations in shorter run times, accelerating the development process.
While AI won’t replace traditional CFD simulations or real-world experiments, it’s an invaluable tool in your toolbox. It can drive speed and efficiency while fostering greater collaboration across teams.
As automotive companies continue to embrace AI and Machine Learning, the future of design is faster, smarter, and more innovative.
