Machiavelli and erotic endeavors aren't usually linked but in addition to "The Prince," he wrote "Carnival Songs," that once scholar says provide a "quizzical outlook on human, especially erotic, endeavors."

He wrote on how a powerful prince should rule in matters of the state, and how lovers can rise and fall in carnival times.

In Italian, the carnival songs are supposedly bawdy, with double meanings. But I read them and you wouldn't play them to a merry-go-round. "Why Machiavelli Matters: A Guide to Citizenship in a Democracy"

As serious and intense of a writer as Machiavelli was, he looked to carnival songs to express the more important aspects of life.
