Is it acceptable to implement “ The MacGyver’s Method” of solving a problem when standard ones do not work?
Power failure of drag head winch main electric motor. One phase of stator found to be faulty. Dredging pipe deep in the water. The emergency recovery system of the drag head found to be isolated. Seemed it had not been used or tested for a very long time if ever... Drag head very close to the seabed. Rough sea and deteriorating weather forecast for the next 12 hours. A hazard of damaging a very expensive dredging system. Unsafe condition for the ship and crew.
>>SAFETY FIRST<<
Options considered: floating crane, divers to lift the pipe. Unfortunately, the very rough sea made this option impossible to utilise.
Other option considered: to use the pneumatic gun to activate the emergency recovery motor. Unfortunately, after modification of the motor shaft – not enough power from the air gun to rotate the emergency recovery motor with expected speed.
Last resource – MacGyver’s Solution: Emergency Recovery Motor connected to the Drag Head Winch power supply. Successful attempt. Dredging system successfully recovered. The ship sailed to the safe haven. All safe... Everybody happy…

4 年Why hello ‘MacGyver’. Good to see the Delta D in operation! Safe sailing and if the Delta D ever taught me one thing... ALWAYS think outside the box.
