Macaranga wins 3 Malaysian journalism awards
Macaranga has won three awards at the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI)-PETRONAS Malaysian Journalism Awards 2022!
We submitted three entries, and won gold in Environmental Journalism, silver in Investigative Journalism, and bronze in Outstanding Features.
We took the gold award for our #TanahAir series that examined drying paddy fields in Kedah, coastal reclamation in Melaka, and trash pollution at Perhentian Island.
Three of our 6-person #TanahAir team attended the awards ceremony on 9 June: Ashley Yeong , Ushar Daniele , and Yao-Hua Law . Missing were Siew Lyn Wong , Lee Kwai Han, and Masjaliza Hamzah .
#TanahAir was supported by funds from The Habitat Foundation(@thfpenang), the Said Zahari Award 2022, and our #MacarangaSupporters.
As for silver in Investigative Journalism, we won that for our #ladanghutan series that revealed the many ways that forest plantations in Peninsular Malaysia have utterly failed their sustainability goals. The problems remain. This series was supported by the Rainforest Investigations Network at the Pulitzer Center .
And we won bronze in Outstanding Features for our entry of three separate stories:
