Masaaki Nagayasu & Hironori Ochi - #FOHSpotlight
L-ISA made its debut in Japan with rockers ‘My Hair is Bad’ in Osaka & Tokyo. System Engineer Masaaki Nagayasu & FOH Engineer Hironori Ochi used it to create an exceptional experience for fans on tour. Let's learn more in our #FOHSpotlight!
Tell us about yourselves
Nagayasu: “I was raised in Okayama. Since childhood I've been around music, especially concerts. I always wanted to work in sound.”
Ochi: “I grew up in Imabari City. When I was in high school, I played in a band and learned that there were jobs in audio. I decided that I was going to be a sound engineer. I went to a vocational school in Osaka to start working in the industry.”
Who are your main clients?
O: “I am an FOH engineer currently linked to 00works.inc. I've toured with Coldrain, Crossfaith, Crystal Lake, My Hair is Bad and more!”
What was your big break?
O: “It was touring globally with Crossfaith. I spent most of 2012 touring mainly in the UK. This gave me the chance to meet a lot of engineers.”
When did you first hear an L-Acoustics system?
N: “I first used V-DOSC in 2000. I remember being really impressed by it. The overall coverage and high frequencies sounded fantastic.”
O: “I think it was V-DOSC as well! It was at a venue called Studio Coast that is now closed. I remember being surprised by how much energy the system had. I don't think I've ever been to a better sounding venue.”
How did L-ISA get to Japan?
N: “I heard L-ISA for the 1st time at a training in Singapore. I explained it to Ochi and together we made it happen. I knew it was the perfect debut for L-ISA in Japan.”
O: “For the 'My Hair is Bad' tour, I personally offered to take part in the project. I thought L-ISA had a brilliant, next generation sound. I first heard it at Hibino HQ last summer.”
Were you happy with the result?
O: “I was impressed by the overall sound thanks to the low level of interference between the K2 hangs & the broader stereo listening area.”
N: “I was impressed by the sound of the kick drum & bass. I remember being surprised at how much better they sounded without the interference of L/R.”
What's your favorite L-Acoustics product/solution?
O: “I like K1 especially in the low frequencies and the lack of peaks/dips. The low-end is clear and I think I was able to create a sound that is difficult to reproduce with L/R.”
N: “I like P1 & LS10! The ease of use of AVB is excellent and although L-ISA uses many output channels, it's simple to connect & set up.”
Was it hard to work with L-ISA software?
N: “I was surprised at how simple and intuitive it is.”
O: “The software is easy to use with nothing too complicated. The controller also gives the same impression.”
Any advice for someone starting out in the industry?
O: “If you work hard every day to create a sound that only you can produce, you'll be able to participate in projects that you really want to be a part of. It will take time but it's worth it. There's a lot to learn but don't give up: have fun & stay passionate!”
