10 Things That Inevitably Happen to Your Personal Life When You Get Sober

Getting sober is a life-changing decision that can lead to positive transformations in various aspects of your life.

To start this off, for those who are reading, getting sober was the best decision in MY LIFE; Im not writing this to try and convert anyone; everyone's lives are different, so don't get me wrong! My hopes are to share my story and learnings to help others that may need support.

I'm writing this novel of a thing to try and answer a plethora of questions that have been sent to me over the last year or so since I "came out publicly about my sobriety."

In fact, about 12 people have suggested I do this, so here I am; I want to help... so here goes nuthin, (puts the semi-serious hat on)

In my experience here are 10 Things That Inevitably Happen To Individuals Personal lives When They Choose To Get Sober...

Substance abuse affects not only your physical and mental health but also your relationships, work, and overall well-being. If you're considering getting sober, here are ten things that you can expect to happen to your personal life.

Of course, everyone's experience with addiction and sobriety is different, and the specific ways in which substance abuse can impact one's life may vary. However, if you are considering getting sober, it's important to be aware of the potential positive changes that can occur in various areas of your life. These can include improvements in physical and mental health, relationships, career and financial stability, decision-making abilities, spirituality, and sense of purpose. The road to sobriety may not always be easy, but in my experience, the benefits have been more than worth it.

Improved Physical Health

Alcohol and drug abuse can take a toll on your body. When you quit drinking or using drugs, your body can start to heal, and you'll notice a significant improvement in your physical health. You may experience weight loss, better sleep, increased energy, improved skin, healthier libido, hair growth and so much more like overall brain health - yep brain health is important, someone really close to me reminded me of this recently

Better Mental Health

Substance abuse can cause or exacerbate mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, and mood swings. When you get sober, your brain chemistry can begin to stabilize, and you'll start to feel better mentally. You may experience improved mood, increased motivation, and better coping skills.

More Meaningful Relationships

Alcohol and drug abuse can strain relationships with family, friends, and romantic partners. When you get sober, you'll have the opportunity to rebuild these relationships and create new ones. You may also find that you attract healthier relationships with people who support your sobriety.

One huge thing I've learnt is setting boundaries in relationships right the way through personal and professional relationships, it's like after the first 6 months of cutting the Booz and "extracurricular" stuff ?? I learnt quickly that I may be doing a lot for others and nowhere enough for myself, setting boundaries is something I look at like a superpower these days, being able to say NO is a way better feeling than jamming something up your nose or guzzling down overpriced bubbles cause you think you're cool.

Increased Self-Esteem

Substance abuse can erode your self-esteem and leave you feeling powerless. When you get sober, you'll regain a sense of control over your life and feel proud of your accomplishments. You'll also be able to set and achieve new goals, which can further boost your self-esteem.

In general, when I was "an addict" I was never happy with myself, EVER - Sure I still get those "frumpy" days where I've eaten too many carbs and feel a little jigglier than I would prefer or I look at my self and go, yesterday you were a 10, whos this 4?

Or an overwhelming amount of imposter syndrome thinking and feeling like i was genuinely putting on a show and was a big fat foney

The point is, there is no anchored vice anymore to hide from me, my real true self.

I've gotten to know myself a little better, and I've learnt that I don't have to try so hard to cover up my Shit basically

Financial Stability

Substance abuse can be expensive, and the cost of drugs and alcohol can quickly add up. When you get sober, you'll save money that you can use for more productive purposes. You'll also be able to focus on your career and financial goals, which can lead to greater financial stability.

Everyone loves money, especially when there is more of it!! to the day that I'm writing this 16/2/2023 according to a nifty app, I've saved over 156k in 3 years of ditching the devil juice and "sick time sherbert" and its true, I've been able to set up my business, be successful enough to run that from the ground up bootstrap style and also nail some property in the mix for some sweet sweet passive income later on in life.

I have a nice car, I eat great quality food whenever I want, I donate to charity, I travel and also may have developed another addiction that I call "amazonaspendtomuchitus" short for I buy to much stuff on amazon - Thanks 亚马逊 for curing my retail therapy more than I care to admit in a public forum

Improved Productivity

Substance abuse can make it challenging to focus on work or school, leading to decreased productivity and poor performance. When you get sober, you'll be able to concentrate on your tasks and be more productive. You may also find that you're more motivated to excel in your career or education.

My brain is always on, but I'm not exhausted, I stay up late now when my mind is most creative and just do more, learn more and enjoy more too - it's the best!!

More Free Time

Substance abuse can take up a lot of your time, leaving little room for hobbies and leisure activities. When you get sober, you'll have more free time to pursue your interests and hobbies. You may also find that you have more energy to participate in activities that you enjoy.

For me, I've taken a HUUUGE interest in motorbikes, going fast (safely) photography, my dogs and cat (arguably the biggest support to my sobriety) and some hiking and backpacking adventures too

Better Decision-Making

Substance abuse can impair your judgment and lead to poor decision-making. When you get sober, you'll be able to think more clearly and make better decisions. You may also find that you're better able to handle difficult situations without turning to drugs or alcohol.

This is a big one, and I'm still learning, I've just learnt that rushing into things without thinking was a massive thing for me back then, ya know...

My mind still gets foggy, because I keep really busy with loads of great things but my clarity is sharper.

Improved Spirituality

Substance abuse can disconnect you from your spirituality and sense of purpose. When you get sober, you'll have the opportunity to explore your spirituality and reconnect with your values. You may also find that you have a greater sense of purpose and meaning in your life.

DISCLAIMER: This next statement is not my own, but I resonate with it entirely and may peak emotions for some.

I once heard that those who seek out religion are those looking for ways to stay outta hell and go to heaven - but those who are more spiritual, believe in a higher purpose but have already been to hell so they want to bring themselves a much more positive outlook on the rest of their lives as they made it out, already.

I feel that today, I have a much more spiritual vibe towards life as for me as an individual I've seen hell.

I've seen my version of "hell" I've seen myself at my absolute worse and at times I believed that it may have been better to pass on than watch myself like that any more.

I like saying I'm a little more spiritual as well because I'm not trying to be anything I'm not any more and I love nature so much now it's a new drug for me

Stronger Support System

Getting sober can be a challenging journey, but you don't have to do it alone. When you get sober, you'll have access to a network of support, including support groups, therapists, and other resources. You'll also be able to rely on your sober friends and family members for support and encouragement.

Frequent Questions I get asked a lot ??

Is getting sober easy?

Getting sober can be a challenging process that requires commitment, effort, and support. It's not easy, but it's worth it.

Not going to beat around the bush, but my biggest piece of advice is to prepare to have harsh convos with yourself and step outside your comfort zone when it comes to letting people know you are firm on your decision to stop.

How do I know if I have a problem with alcohol or drugs?

If you're experiencing negative consequences in your life as a result of alcohol or drug use, such as health problems, relationship issues, financial difficulties, or legal problems, it may be a sign that you have a problem with substance abuse. If you're unsure, talking to a healthcare professional or addiction specialist can help you determine if you need help.

If at the end of every day you go for a drink, and it ends up being more than 1, this could be a warning sign, "needing" a drink is also a sure way that you have a codependent relationship with substance, that's not healthy in general.

Can I get sober on my own?

While some people are able to quit drinking or using drugs on their own, it can be challenging, especially if you have a severe addiction. Seeking support from a healthcare professional, therapist, or support group can improve your chances of success.

There are groups out there that can help, Yes I mean AA, it's a real thing and has been saving lives for millions for many many years, it's okay to try new things.

What are some of the challenges of getting sober?

Getting sober can be challenging for various reasons, including withdrawal symptoms, cravings, social pressures, and emotional triggers. It's important to have a plan in place and seek support to overcome these challenges.

What are some strategies for maintaining sobriety?

Some strategies for maintaining sobriety include attending support groups, practising self-care, avoiding triggers, having a support system, and seeking professional help when needed.

I'll Wrap up with this

Getting sober can be a transformative experience that can lead to numerous positive changes in your life.

From improved physical and mental health to more meaningful relationships, financial stability, and better decision-making, there are many benefits to sobriety.

While getting sober can be challenging, it's worth the effort, and with the right support and strategies, you can maintain your sobriety and enjoy a fulfilling, healthy life. Remember that sobriety is a journey, not a destination, and it's important to take it one day at a time, celebrating each victory along the way.

Final note and statement, it was really difficult to write this, I hope it's not offended anyone and above all, I hope that my getting a little real with my network can provoke some guidance for anyone out there looking for some support with their mental health.

If you have any questions, ask away, id like to answer them as best as I can and raise awareness.

Thanks for reading, I really appreciate your time x

Jordan Betteridge that was genuinely inspiring, thank you for sharing such a powerfully personal perspective. Addiction can sneak up on you and before you know it you are out of control. So much to think about in that piece and some things to action as well.

To correct my uncertainty, the quote i mentioned in the "spiritual change" section of this was "Religion is for people who're afraid of going to hell. Spirituality is for those who've already been there" - Vine Deloria Jr.
