Tech companies are enthusiastically embracing generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools capable of generating business memos and computer code. However, they grapple with the challenge of turning these innovative products into profitable ventures. These AI tools are costly to operate, relying on powerful servers with expensive, power-hungry chips. Companies like Microsoft, 谷歌 , and Adobe are experimenting with different strategies to monetize AI but are encountering hurdles.

For instance, 微软 initially experienced losses with one of its generative AI products, GitHub Copilot. To offset expenses, they are now introducing AI-backed software upgrades at higher price points. Microsoft's GitHub Copilot, though popular among programmers, has been expensive to run. While individual users pay $10 a month, the company was reportedly losing over $20 per user per month on average earlier this year.

Investor caution remains due to uncertainties about the profitability of AI models, despite the soaring valuations of AI-linked companies. Executives are likely to pay closer attention to the costs and profitability of generative AI in the coming year.
