Lynchburg Regional Airport Concrete Apron Expansion
Challenge
Located in the heart of Virginia with close proximity to three major highways, Lynchburg Regional Airport (LYH) serves as a vital link to destinations throughout the region and nation – playing a key role in the community’s growth and serving as a convenient gateway for the area’s international corporations, manufacturing plants, research and development firms, colleges, and universities.
Operated by the City of Lynchburg, the Lynchburg Regional Airport needed to expand its existing general aviation concrete apron to accommodate a new hangar development owned and operated by a Fixed Base Operator located at the airport, as well as future development.
Solution
The City of Lynchburg partnered with SEH’s Airport Planning and Design Team through every stage of the project – from initial conceptualization to final design and throughout the construction process.
The project involved the construction of 22,500 sq. ft. of new concrete pavement designed to accommodate aircraft exceeding 100,000 lbs., the proposed aircraft size the hangar is intended to serve. The project also included modifications to the site’s electrical infrastructure, mass grading, and installing a new underground stormwater detention system.
This new apron aligns with Lynchburg's ongoing commitment to expand and modernize their facilities.
