?? Lyft forced to depart from Minnesota

After 13 years of service in the Twin Cities, the Lyft-operated?Nice Ride bikeshare system is shutting down.?

According to reports,?Nice Ride Minnesota– the local non-profit that manages the program– was unable to fill a $2 million funding gap after its sponsorship contract with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota was not renewed. Beginning the search for a new sponsor, the board at Nice Ride board put out a proposal for another non-profit to take over their activities and assets, which was won by The Great Plains Institute. Unfortunately, Lyft’s search was unsuccessful and they were forced to cease operations.?

In the wake of Lyft’s departure, Nice Ride has?solicited proposals?from other public bikeshare programs and community organisations to repurpose the assets, including bikes, electric bikes, and station hardware.

Whilst unfortunate, this development highlights the importance of ensuring financial support from multiple sponsors in order to buffer the impact of a debilitating sponsor drop-out.

While the U.S. business has had a rocky start to 2023,?Bird Canada?continues to prove that it understands exactly how to cultivate strong partnerships with cities and provinces. They have been operating dockless scooters and bikes in the City of Windsor since 2021 under a local pilot scheme.?

Following the success of this scheme, the city administration is now?pushing council members to greenlight a contract with Bird Canada?for a three-year term, with options to extend it for up to two years.

If successful, this contract would be a huge win in a growing Canadian market for shared micromobility.
