People’s reasons for buying luxury motorbike range from uniqueness, conformity, and self-esteem, needing permanent, reliable transportation and wanting to play with something fun & powerful machine. As they contemplate their vehicle purchase, following are the top reason that they consider:

  1. The experience: Luxury bike elevates driving to an art form. The striking look, the purr of the engine, the way it makes others head turn while you are driving, and the feel of the wheel in your hands—these are the things you experience every time you drive a luxury bike.
  2. Status & prestige: A luxury vehicle is the physical manifestation of all that hard work you've put in at the office, the smart investments you've made, and the culmination of that dream. It's your way of saying to the world and to yourself, "Hey, I've arrived!"
  3. High performance: Better horsepower, bigger engines, more power and they go from 0 to 60 in less time. Luxury bikes are also designed to handle more.
  4. The look: It's true, luxury bikes are built for more than serviceability. They're designed for beauty, speed, comfort and performance. They're sleeker, sexier and faster than their non-luxury/premium counterparts, and they're made to be appreciated and admired.
  5. Safety is standard: Luxury bike uses a series of special sensors integrated into the stock electronics which are keeping an eye on the motorcycle’s dynamics to detect a crash. After the sensors indicate that a crash is imminent then the system automatically deploys the airbag in only 45 milliseconds, thus enhancing the rider’s safety. Features like anti-lock brakes (ABS), side airbags and stability and traction control that tend to be extras on other bikes are often standard fare in luxury bikes.
  6. Technology savvy: First class features all the way. Luxury automakers are always building the latest and greatest features: motorcycle wirelessly integrated with airbag riding jackets, liquid cooled engine.
  7. Special treatment: Customer service is king and luxury bike dealerships are not only equipped to quickly handle any hiccups in your own bike, they're fully prepared to go the extra mile to take care of you while your bike is in the shop.
  8. Peace of mind: That old adage "You get what you pay for," comes to mind when you consider the cost of that luxury vehicle. Sure, you're paying more for it, but consider the peace of mind that comes with that price tag. You know you're getting a good product: the best parts, service and manufacturing. Plus, even if something does go wrong, you can fall back on that extra-long warranty and the free loaner.

Its all about experience and social status. Especially in India, where people love travelling, buy expensive things just to showcase and impress their social groups instead of true meaning of exploration and self happiness.

Owning a luxury bike is all about the sheer pride, attention, satisfaction. Its achieving a huge life goal milestone. The heads turning, stares, ogling eyes gives the rider a high. Rider feels like a cowboy / macho stud.

I feel people who haven't inherited wealth but have worked their way towards it, buying a luxury product certainly is an reminder to self of "having arrived" like you mentioned in the article. Being able to afford a luxury good is a leveler in that sense. Definitely, luxury industries (goods/services) are thriving on, 1. people able to afford them already 2. people aspiring to be able to afford them someday:-)
