Lunar Pioneers: The Daring Journey of JAXA's SLIM Lander
In the vast expanse of space, a small robotic pioneer named SLIM, developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), has entered a state of hibernation after a series of nights devoid of sunlight on the moon's surface.
SLIM faced its first challenge. On January 20, 2024, a malfunction in the solar cells was detected, leading to a temporary shutdown of the power supply just 2.5 hours post-landing.
Despite this setback, SLIM managed to transmit all the data it had captured back to Earth by January 22. At a press conference on January 25, the possibility of an engine malfunction affecting the lander's posture and consequently the operation of the solar cells was discussed. This hypothesis was supported by images of SLIM, which were released to the public, showing the lander in an unexpected 'inverted' stance.
NASA's lunar satellites captured images of SLIM, which were released on January 27, followed by an announcement on January 28 that the solar cells were functioning normally after a reboot. The latest images of SLIM were shared on January 29, showcasing the lander's resilience and adaptability.
On February 1, JAXA announced that SLIM had entered hibernation.

Despite these challenges, SLIM achieved its primary goal of pinpoint landing with an impressive accuracy of 55 meters.
Moreover, it carried a mission of cosmic significance – to explore "the origins of the moon".
Equipped with a multi-band spectrometer camera, SLIM sent back 257 images, focusing on the mineral olivine, a key to unlocking the secrets of the moon's formation.
The prevailing theory, known as "Giant-Impact Hypothesis", suggests that the moon was created from a colossal collision between Earth and another celestial body. By analyzing the composition of olivine samples captured by SLIM and comparing them to Earth's mantle, scientists hope to validate this theory.
As SLIM rests in the lunar night, it not only marks a pause in its adventure but also a moment to reflect on the incredible strides made in space exploration.
To SLIM, I will say, "Well done," and to the future, we look forward with anticipation for the revelations yet to come.
