Lumonics School of Light Art, Denver, CO

We are happy to announce that we are now offering a new class at the Lumonics School of Light Art as an alternative to those with less interest in the construction process and time constraints, but would like to "artify" a lighted cube:

A 1-day class on any Saturday from 9am to 4pm with a 1/2 lunch break. We will provide you with a “ready-made” LED-lighted white cube with a remote control to alter the colors, and have all art materials available for you to use. You take home your new light sculpture at the end of the day. Each class is limited to two students. A minimum of 5 days notice is necessary so we can build your cube in advance. Cost: $305

We are still offering the 4-Saturday class of three hours per session (morning or afternoon) in which you do the construction of the cube and then the artifying. Cost: $305

Professional assistance is available every step of the way.

The Lumonics School of Light Art began in October, 2017. It has been a gratifying experience to share our knowledge with you. Lumonics is one of the oldest and longest running light art studios in the U.S. We hope taking the class sparks your creativity to continue in this field of art or something entirely different.

Visit www.lumonics.net/artclass for the full description, and thank you for your support.

About the Class:

An innovative hands-on approach to learning light art in which you take home your original light sculpture upon completing the class. You will be working with plexiglas and other materials, and LED lighting.

Importantly, you do not need to be an artist to take this course, but you will feel more artistic and confident of your artistic abilities when the class concludes.

Course instructor, Marc Billard, has decades of experience working closely with trailblazing light sculptors Dorothy and Mel Tanner. Dorothy Tanner is the recipient of the 2018 Denver Mayor's Award for Artistic Excellence and Innovation. Just walking into the studio/gallery fires the imagination.

The 1- Session Class:

On any Saturday of the month, we are offering a class from 9am to 4pm with a 1/2 lunch break that you are welcome to spend in the Lumonics Gallery. We will provide you with a completed LED-lighted white cube with a remote control to change colors, and have all art materials available for you to use. We will offer you the assistance you need. You are welcome to bring mementoes to adhere to the cube. The goal is for you to leave at the end of the Saturday class with your completed artwork, which we will also photograph for you. The total cost including the ready-made cube, instructions, and materials is $305. If you find that you require more time, you can return to complete it for an additional $20 an hour. Our experience has been that most students have completed the cube in the allotted time but some do not. These projects have become very important to people, which is why some do not mind having more time for completion. We photograph your light sculpture when completed. Each class is limited to two students.  A minimum of 5 days notice is necessary so we can build your cube in advance.

The 4-Session Class:

New classes begin the 1st Saturday of every month and run 4 consecutive Saturdays, each session being 3 hours. Classes are limited to 4 students so everyone gets as much personal attention as needed. Choose from either a morning or afternoon class.

Duets: At classes at the Lumonics School of Light Art, "teams of 2" have successfully worked on a single cube together as well as individually. So we want to encourage you to share the experience of creating something with a loved one to enjoy in your home every day. Children or teens under 18 must be accompanied by a parent, grandparent, guardian, adult sister or brother. We really like to see different generations working cooperatively. There is no additional charge for the second person to create one light sculpture together.

WEEKEND OR WEEKDAY INTENSIVE

To accommodate those with scheduling problems, we are now offering a 2-day intensive: you can take the 9am -12noon class, break for 2 hours and then take the 2pm-5pm class for 2 consecutive days to complete your light sculpture. Email us at [email protected] if you have any questions.

VOCATIONAL TRAINING

We  are reaching out to young adults, particularly those on the autistic spectrum, to take our vocational classes. The classes are directed toward those with an interest in a career in the creative arts, set design, and immersive entertainment.

We are offering a three-course program: creating a  cube, column, and wall piece with 3 separate lighting applications and experience working with many tools. Each class is 12 hours, completed in four 3-hour sessions. (36 hours of training)  The skills learned will be a valuable complement to additional vocational training. For more information, call us at 303.568.9406 or email: [email protected]

* More than half of young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder remain unemployed and unenrolled in higher education in the two years after high school.  (Autism Speaks website)

ART AND MENTAL HEALTH

The founder of the Lumonics School of Light Art, Dorothy Tanner, completed a highly acclaimed 6-month art exhibit at the McNichols Civic Center Building in 2018, entitled Lumonics Mind Spa: Stretching the Body, Mind and Spirit.  Shanna Shelby, the Program Administrator at the McNichols Building, nominated Dorothy for the Denver Mayor’s Award for Innovation in the Arts. Ms. Shelby wrote about the increasing awareness of how art and mental health are connected: “Several panels at the national AFTA (Americans for the Arts) conference this year explored artistic approaches to community health. I believe that Dorothy’s vision is a prime example of how arts and wellness intersect and promote public health goals. I strongly believe that promoting creative arts-based approaches to health and wellness create lasting impact and ultimately lasting change.”

The Lumonics School of Light Art is part of 7 Healing Stars, a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is a collective of artists, holistic healers, professionals, organizations, spiritual and community leaders creating an ever evolving platform of self-discovery and empowerment at the individual and collective level, focusing on: Nutrition, Sustainability, Education and Research, Health and Wellness, Arts and Culture, Spirituality, and Community. The Lumonics School of Light Art touches on several of these aspects.
