Lumed: named one of the Top 5 Startups impacting Healthcare

We live in disruptive times, where technology has taken on a significant role in our daily lives. Specifically, technologies related to healthcare are vital in the digital transformation strategy for governments of any country. For example, in Mexico, cardiovascular diseases are categorized as a national emergency due to the severe consequences they have on all aspects of social life.

A specific case of these healthcare technologies is Telemedicine: platforms that allow remote collaboration between healthcare professionals, sharing contextual information about a person's condition at a given time.

Recently, the startup that I helped create: Lumedhealth, was named one of the Top 5 Telemedicine Startups worldwide. The stellar product in our company is Lumed: a digital collaboration platform that integrates all the necessary elements to provide quality medical care (medical equipment, videoconference, EMR, agenda), through a single, simple, flexible and highly intuitive interface that enables physicians to enjoy the experience of delivering Telemedicine consultations focusing on what is most important: the patient. Lumed has been built mostly by using Microsoft technologies, such as .NET and Azure.

This distinction is a great honor for us; however, the path of a startup is not easy. Over several years I have detected the following challenges that every entrepreneur must solve before embarking on this great adventure.

Know your domain

One of the most important objectives that you should consider is to make sure you know in detail the field that your software solution is trying to solve. For example, Telemedicine is commonly misinterpreted as having videoconferencing or chatbot capabilities in the software. While these features are useful, clinical data, pathological and non-pathological history, imaging, interoperability with other external systems, implementation of international standards, and medical protocols are much more essential features.

Know your market

Some of our clients at Lumedhealth are the Mexican Navy Secretariat (SEMAR), the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Up to now, our primary market is public or private health institutions within Mexico.

The need for efficient healthcare solutions is indeed something universal. It is also true that government laws and healthcare institutions' operations vary from country to country (it can even vary from state to state).

Know your market, align your software solutions with your target market, and you will be on the right track.

Hire the correct people

This is crucial for managing any company, regardless of whether it is a small startup or a large corporation.

Make sure to bring to your company those people who match your values and mission that you have set. In the specific case of software startups, ensure to incorporate into your team, people who like to learn new things, and who can continuously renew themselves. Be mindful of the fact that soft skills are generally harder to learn than hard skills.
