Luke’s Story: Following in his grandfather’s footsteps
In honour of Indigenous Veterans Day and Remembrance Day, we asked LNG Canada employee, Luke Schauerte , to share his story of service:
“My grandfather was a World War II veteran who served in the Royal Canadian Artillery.?
I graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada in 2000 and subsequently joined the Royal Canadian Navy as a Combat Systems Engineering Officer. I had the privilege to serve on HMCS OTTAWA, HMCS CALGARY, and to deploy with HMCS REGINA on Operation Apollo in the Persian Gulf – supporting the war on terrorism in Afghanistan in 2003.
The strong sense of belonging and pride in being a part of the team is the most rewarding overlap between being in the military and working for an organization like LNG Canada.?
Moving from the military to Shell in 2005, my biggest challenge was learning to integrate military style and focus into a corporate business environment. Understanding what it takes to build a common vision and forward momentum in a more flexible culture was a great area of growth for me as a leader.
My background in leadership as a naval officer fostered my core values that I bring to work every day: caring for people, inspiring commitment, and ensuring what we do fits into the big picture… combined with the grit to make the tough challenges into successes.?
My time deployed on ships built long-term friendships that stay with me always. Service to my country was foundational.”
