Luck As Preparedness
By Jen Gowers
The absolute best interview advice I can give you is this: Stand in your Greatness.
- REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE. Have an anchoring item with you that reminds you of who you are and/or how many folks are rooting for you. When I interview, I like to keep a small stone in my pocket because it reminds of the perseverance of sand, water, pressure and time, and it's also soothing to feel it in my palm. It grounds me. I also typically wear or bring my Aunt Edna's knit hat along in my bag because I like to be reminded that the ancestors have my back!
- SPEAK TO WHAT YOU HAVE DONE. IMPRESS. Share humbly about all of your very best work. Look people in the eye. Be warm. Dress the part. Shake hands firmly. :D My dad used to say that things were complicated enough without messing up the basics. Look professional, even above the role you're applying to receive. Find a way to share the things you're most proud of, and do it with grace by mentioning how many people were part of that success and the impact on the community you serve. Lastly, never underestimate a strong handshake - people literally tell me it's the thing they remembered most about my interviews! Can you imagine?! So shake like you mean it!
- REFLECT IN GRATITUDE. Send that thank you. Stand out with it. Know that it was an honor to share space and time with the human beings you just met. Then, try to let it go. If you have friends who audition, they can help you learn the spirit of that. You give your all, then you walk away and trust that what is for you will not pass you. If you gave your best self, the rest is up to the universe.
