Luck = Opportunity + Preparation + Execution

My family was recently featured on a #HGTV series #designatyourdoor and my friends & clients have all been asking how we got SO LUCKY. The question made me think…was it really luck? Which led me to write this post.

A couple years ago my wife sent in an application for an opportunity with HGTV. The casting director followed up to let her know that the show had been cast and she would keep us in mind for other projects. Fast forward to April 2020. My wife received an email inquiring if we were interested in participating in a groundbreaking, self-filmed, DIY project for HGTV…??? We quickly responded with TELL US MORE!!! Which was followed by “Can you do a SKYPE interview tomorrow?  I have a few questions. It should only take about 10 minutes.” And our story began.

We had 24 hours to get ready, to impress, to tell our story, to be real, and to be prepared! We researched the demographics for HGTV, looked at the lineup of successful HGTV shows and read up on the bios of the top talent. We looked around the house for the best place to film our interview, adjusted the lighting & practiced interviewing together as a couple. It worked! Our 10-minute interview turned into 45 minutes. We laughed, we smiled, our girls jumped in, our dog made an appearance and we all had a great time. Our casting director was quick with follow up requesting questionnaires to be filled out, photos to be taken, and room measurements to be sent. We made sure that every request was met with quality timely responses.

Two days later we received word that we were selected! Time for execution. Over the next 5 weeks, we wanted to exceed expectations on every request that came our way. We prepped for all our Zoom calls, cleared wardrobe with the production crew far in advance, followed the design instructions, kept everything confidential, and always finished on time or early. Our celebrity designer was a huge surprise, Maureen McCormick (aka Marcia Brady)! As an unprecedented professional, “Mo” was an inspiration to our star-struck teenagers and one of the kindest people we have met.

We grabbed a hold of the opportunity, prepared beyond measure, and executed above expectations. The room transformation was crazy awesome, and we loved the edited content that was shown on TV! Was it luck to be cast on the show? Maybe…luck plays a role in many aspects of our life. But what you do next will write your story.

How are you prepping yourself to be in a position where an opportunity could give you a big win?
