Lubrication, Friction And Wear
Lubrication is the process or technique of using a lubricant (liquids, gases, vapors, i.e., fluids, plastic substances and solids in powder form) to reduce friction and wear and tear in a contact between two moving surfaces.
General lubrication functions are
Power transmission, such as oil control valves in some classic engine.
Reduction of friction and wear, this is most common function of lubrication.
Damping of impact and vibration, such as hydraulic valve actuator application.
Reduction of noise, which is similar with damping function.
Cooling: Dissipation of friction heat, such as the piston jet.
Cleaning: Discharge of particles of all kinds.
Corrosion protection.
In engine system, friction and wear are two main topics related to lubrication.
Friction in engine systems is what we want to reduce or eliminate because part of the mechanical energy already "generated" with poor efficiency is converted again into thermodynamically "lower valency" heat. By reducing the viscosity and load-bearing strength of the lubricant, this heat impairs the function of components. In extreme cases, damage can occur because of the bearings running warm or hot. Friction can be classified as dry friction, fluid or viscous friction, gas friction and mixed friction.
Types of friction includes static, kinetic, rolling friction and etc.
