Lubombo Mountain Hike: A Unique Community Engagement Initiative Led by USL’s Employees

The Lubombo Mountain Hike, an annual event organised by the employees of Ubombo Sugar Limited (USL), successfully drew throngs pf participants on Saturday, 13 July 2024. This initiative is a shining example of how companies can give back to the community through innovative and engaging events.

This initiative not only raises funds for community-focused charity initiatives under the theme “Changing Lives, One Community at a Time,” but also brings together various people from different sectors, fostering a sense of unity and collaboration.

Commitment to Community Welfare

During the event Mr. Leonard Ndzimandze, Head of Corporate Affairs, speaking on behalf of USL’s Managing Director, Mr. Muzi Siyaya, emphasised USL's commitment to aiding surrounding communities, acknowledging that the company operates and lives among them, and is thus aware of their needs. He mentioned that this year, the hike moved from the upper side of Lubombo Mountain, where it usually takes place, to the southern side of the Mkhalamfene area to get closer to more communities neighboring USL.

Donation of Water Tank

This year, the company recognised the plight of students who climb the mountain daily to reach school at the top. Some children from the Mkhalamfene area and from as far as Big Bend and surrounding areas walk about 4 kilometers to attend school at the top of the Lubombo Mountain, along the border between Eswatini and South Africa. To support these students, USL, through this employee initiative, donated a 5000-litre water tank placed at the bottom of the hill, ensuring the children could access clean water to prevent dehydration. The tank, purchased with funds from last year’s hiking event, will also benefit the community in general.

Employee-driven Initiative

This initiative showcases the dedication and spirit of volunteerism among USL employees, particularly the Wellness Champions. This committed group of employees voluntarily dedicates their time and effort to planning and executing events that directly benefit the surrounding communities. Their involvement reflects a deep-seated commitment to social responsibility and the well-being of their neighbours.

Promoting Team Unity and Well-being Through Hiking

Hiking and being in nature provide an excellent backdrop for company activities, fostering teamwork and collaboration among employees. The natural environment offers a refreshing break from the usual office setting, promoting physical health, reducing stress, and enhancing mental well-being. Outdoor activities like hiking can encourage team bonding, improve communication, and boost morale, all of which contribute to a more cohesive and productive work environment. Moreover, such initiatives demonstrate the company's commitment to employee wellness and corporate social responsibility, further strengthening the organisational culture.

Event Attendees

The event enjoyed widespread support, drawing representatives from various sectors. Attendees included individuals from the private sector and various government ministries such as the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Public Works and Transport, Ministry of Tinkhundla Administration, and the DPM’s office. UN agencies and NGOs also participated, reflecting the event's alignment with broader developmental goals. The presence of schoolchildren from neighbouring schools further fostered a sense of community and collective effort.
