LTE High PRB Utilization - Understanding & Way Forward

Dear My Teammates,

One of factors that may annoy any customer is high PRB utilization that any cell have been reached in range greater than 85% up to maximum 97% in BH interval that they always ask about way forward to compensate this behavior.

 Actually PRB utilization factor should correlate with Max_User_Num as :

  • High PRB Utilization && Low User Number => that means serving UEs enjoying almost very satisfied throughput regarding to LTE 4G Signal they can see in their handsets.
  • In other side, High PRB Utilization && High User Number => here is the problem as this means most of serving UEs have bad/unsatisfied throughput experience.

 But what are reasons behind high PRB utilization ? i means if theses high PRB consumption is actually due to UE demand or due to bad RF condition?

  • High PRB Utilization && Low DL Spectral efficiency == Means high CE users that consume more PRB utilization due to bad DL-SINR/DL-CQI/DL-MCS so higher PRB Utilization & high DL Latency in scheduling

Justification & Solution:: Bad DL throughput due to bad CQI due to bad RSRP/RSRQ overlap/overshooting signals, physical actions to enhance throughput.

  • High PRB Utilization && high DL Spectral efficiency == Means most of Users are cell-centre users with good DL-SINR/DL-CQI/SL-MCS so higher PRB Utilization & low/Medium DL Latency in scheduling

Justification & Solution:: Bad DL throughput due to bad CQI due high load , need BW upgrade or offload actions.
