The LRN 2024 Code of Conduct Report

LRN is proud to announce the publication of our 2024 Code of Conduct Report, which highlights generational gaps and other divides hindering ethical workplace cultures worldwide.???

The 2024 Report provides quantitative research and insights on the connection between an organization’s code of conduct and business impact. It dives deep into employee perceptions of codes – their needs, behaviors, and preferences – to enable organizations with the insights needed to better assess risk and advance their E&C programs.

Key findings from this year’s report include:

???? Gen Z employees are 2.5x more likely to bend the rules despite consulting codes of conduct more frequently than older generations. ??

???? Gaps in how senior leaders, middle managers, and front-line employees perceive code adherence, with 90% of senior leaders believing the code is followed compared to 81% of middle managers and a drop-off to 69% of front-line workers.

???? Employees are 1.7x more likely to prefer viewing the code in a traditional (PDF) format, suggesting that organizations need to communicate the benefits of digital tools more effectively to encourage adoption.

???? Employees in hybrid work arrangements engage with codes of conduct more effectively than fully remote or in-office workers.

Code of Conduct Masterclass Series

LRN in cooperation with the International Compliance Association and the Forensic Risk Alliance hosted a NYC Masterclass that took place on September 10, which included a great discussion led by LRN’s Advisory Services Director Jim Walton, CCEP , Courtney Colligan (CVP – Group Chief Compliance Officer, News Corp ), Derek Patterson (Partner, Forensic Risk Alliance ) and Tim Tyler (VP, International Compliance Association ).??

Great discussions and lots of brainstorming at the NYC Masterclass.

New York was then followed by a London Masterclass on September 19, with another practical insights discussion this time led by LRN’s Chief Advisory Officer Ty Francis MBE, CCEP , Rebecca Mayfield (Global Compliance Counsel, MERLIN ENTERTAINMENT LIMITED ), Charlie Patrick (Partner, Forensic Risk Alliance ), and moderated by Tim Tyler ( International Compliance Association ). The session was packed with dynamic conversations and valuable insights on transforming codes of conduct to address emerging risks and strengthen workplace ethics:?

?? Rebecca Mayfield: "Compliance isn’t just about what not to do; it’s about doing things the right way and showing why." She emphasized reframing concepts like happiness as engagement and belonging, making compliance more relatable and impactful. ??? Tip: To measure the success of your compliance communications, Rebecca suggests, “Find a friend in IT!” ?? IT teams can unlock valuable analytics to gauge engagement levels with compliance materials. ??
?? Charlie Patrick: "Once you have a happy workforce, the code of conduct works itself out."

?? This underscores how culture drives compliance and the importance of aligning employee values with organizational ethics.

?? Hot topics discussed included:

? Engaging fully remote or hybrid employees with company culture.

? Rethinking compliance content delivery—PDFs on mobile just don’t cut it! ?? The medium matters.

? Involving employees in shaping their own code of conduct to enhance relatability from day one. ??

The session also highlighted the critical role of people managers in code communication, the generational impact on compliance engagement, and bridging the gap between leadership and employee perceptions of the code.

Full house for the London Masterclass event, with engaging conversation and peer-to-peer practices sharing.

And for those who missed London and New York, it’s not too late to sign-up for our Singapore and Amsterdam Masterclasses. The Singapore ???? Masterclass is on October 3, 2024; and Amsterdam ???? is on October 16, 2024 (to coincide with Compliance Week ). We hope to see you there and the information and? registration link can be found here.?
