I am sure you know Moore’s Law - ? the cost and 2x the performance every 18 months. This explains why your cell phone is obsolete about a week after you buy it.

This law only works if the product development budget is “unlimited” - which, for all practical purposes is true for large companies like Apple and Samsung. 

For everyone else like you and me (small companies), we have to decide when the cost savings/extra margins is large enough to justify the substantial pain and cost of developing a new model.
