Qualitative coding might seem like a tedious task, but it makes taking a large set of data manageable and organized. Imagine coding as the difference between organizing your clothes in a walk-in closet versus putting them in a drawer. One makes everything easier to see, compare, and manage. Here are three practical tips to improve your coding process: 1. Create Starter Codes: Begin with a few initial codes that align with your research questions. Preliminary codes help you quickly spot relevant data and you can always add more when needed. 2. Start Broad: Resist the urge to code too granularly to early. Broad categories help you stay organized and avoid code overload. 3. Use Short, Clear Labels: Keep your codes concise. Aim for a single word or short phrase. While coding is time-intensive, these tips can help streamline the process, making it easier to extract meaningful insights from your data. Designing for users is only half the job. The other half?… Getting stakeholders on board ?? It’s not enough to rely on empathy or qualitative insights alone; stakeholders need to see the business impact. Kim Flaherty walks through how to translate your design recommendation into business terms your stakeholders will understand. → Step 1: Identifying a descriptive metric. For instance, how many customer support calls are related to a specific problem? → Step 2: Translate the problem into business terms. For example, if each support call costs about $3 and you’re getting 1,000 calls monthly due to that problem, that’s $3,000 in operational costs. Yikes ?? → Step 3: Forecast how your proposed design changes will impact the business positively. Forecasting value will help make your design recommendations a reality. By aligning our recommendations with tangible business outcomes, we bridge the gap between UX and business priorities making it easier for stakeholders to see the value of investing in UX. What does it mean to have a discovery mindset? Well, discovery isn’t just about research; it’s about fostering curiosity, collaboration, and flexibility to truly understand your users’ problem before jumping to solutions. Too often, teams rush into discovery with a solution in mind and this can limit your ability to discover valuable insights about your users and their needs and the problem you want to solve. You also risk building the wrong thing…??. A discovery mindset means that a team is open to learning: → That their assumptions are wrong → New things they hadn’t expected to learn Want to learn more about avoiding solution mindsets when starting discovery? Check out Maria Rosala's article for 3 methods to avoiding solutioneering: https://bit.ly/48Rnrnp #UXResearch #ProductDiscovery #UXMindset #UserExperience #DesignThinking #Solutioneering #Discovery #DiscoveryMindset

What do Ctrl + C, double tap to react and “Hey Siri” have in common? They are all accelerators, or UI features that speed up an interaction or process. These shortcuts can enhance our interfaces by helping our users complete their tasks more quickly. Now, not all actions need an accelerator. Try focusing on features that many people tend to use repeatedly. Try thinking about these 4 best practices when creating accelerators for your interface: → Prioritize Efficiency Without Overwhelming Users: Start with the most used actions and introduce additional accelerators gradually → Maintain Consistency Across Platforms: Double-tap to react? It should work the same on mobile and desktop to avoid frustrating users. Consistency across devices makes accelerators truly intuitive. → Provide Visual Cues and Feedback: Tooltips, hover states, or contextual hints are great ways to teach users about accelerators without overwhelming them. → Design for Error Prevention and Recovery: Provide a safety net for users to undo actions performed via accelerators on the off chance that they triggered them accidentally. When done right, UI accelerators make workflows seamless, letting users engage at their own speed without compromise. Do you believe in any technology myths, like airlines raising increase prices based on your interest? Well, tech myths, like this one, can strongly shape how people interact with digital products and even increase interaction cost. You might’ve even caught yourself switching devices for the same flight search to make sure you get the best price. Most of the time it all comes down to user uncertainty and distrust of digital products or companies. But how can we spot and address tech myths effectively: 1?? Listen for Assumptions During Research: Users often voice beliefs about how a system functions 2?? Ask Clarifying Questions: Sometimes asking a probing question will help you to get a deeper understanding of what they believe and why 3?? Correct Misconceptions Thoughtfully: This might be through a tooltip or contextual guidance that gives some insight into how your system works. Want to learn more about technology myths? In UX design, icons may be small part of your designs, but their impact on user experience is anything but. A well-designed icon does more than just look good; it communicates intent, guides users, and reduces cognitive load. But how do I know if my icons work well together? This is where understanding icon anatomy comes in handy. Let’s break it down into a few key elements: Content Area: This is where the icon’s design lives, for example a 20x20 pixel grid. Padding: The space between the icon’s content and its boundary. Stroke: AKA the border, this is the line that encompass the shape. Corners: Either sharp or rounded, corners are where two strokes meet. These components may seem small, but they contribute to a creating a cohesive, intuitive icon set for your company.
