?? 'Hunger Games' studio Lionsgate announce AI video deal

Read the story →

Lionsgate's decision to let AI train on their film archive is a gamble that could redefine the entertainment industry. Already garnering negative reactions from creators and facing ongoing legal battles, Lionsgate could either push the industry forward or deepen the divide between human creativity and machine-driven production.

The balance between technological efficiency and maintaining artistic integrity and creative control over intellectual property will be key – if it’s even possible.

?? Can ‘low-tech’ help build a sustainable internet?

Read the story →

Kris de Decker’s Low-Tech Magazine highlights how past knowledge and technologies can be used to design a sustainable society.

Contrary to the projection that the internet would ‘dematerialise’ society, it has become a rapidly growing consumer of energy, now contributing to 10% of global electricity use. To address this, Low-Tech Magazine rebuilt their website to suggest an alternative to the current internet.

The website lives on a balcony, hosted on a mini-computer, powered by a small off-grid solar system. It has its own battery storage, and it goes offline during long periods of cloudy weather.

By embracing a solar-powered site, the magazine highlights a refreshing perspective: We don’t always need more technology. Sometimes less can lead to more sustainable, intentional experiences. Plus, when did all websites need 100% uptime, anyway?

?? Albanese government forging ahead with social media age restrictions despite Meta’s new Instagram teen accounts

Read the story →

The Albanese government's push for stricter age restrictions on social media highlights the growing tension between government intervention and tech giants like Meta, who are trying to steer the narrative towards self-regulation. While Meta's new Instagram teen settings represent a performance of progress, skepticism persists about whether these measures go far enough or can be enforced effectively.

As with all areas of harm reduction in society – from criminal justice to clinical risk – regulation is a double-sided coin. Without an external force assessing, judging, and ultimately applying accountability, performative regulations remain as such.

In moving toward a popular public discourse of responsible digital ecosystems, new thinking needs to consider the culture behind producing and reposting content, with the spotlight falling squarely on shifting incentives away from an ‘engaging and clickbaiting' model. Long term, this is the only strategy that will reap meaningful results.

?? Norway: electric cars outnumber petrol for first time in ‘historic milestone’

Read the story →

For the first time ever, electric cars outnumber petrol vehicles in Norway, marking a significant milestone in the country’s push toward a cleaner future. Acknowledging Norway's context – an almost unique mix of purchasing power, social awareness, and infrastructure, it's clearly a milestone to learn from.

How can we make what today is exceptional the norm in many other places?

Very insightful. The Albanese government's focus on social media regulation really emphasizes the need for genuine accountability, and Norway’s shift to electric cars is a milestone worth replicating globally. A strong reminder of the balance needed between innovation, ethics, and sustainability. Thanks for sharing. ????
