Low and Slow Down the Hudson
Entering the Hudson River VFR Corridor by the George Washington Bridge-Matthew Knuth

Low and Slow Down the Hudson

I recently made a 12 hour flight from Connecticut back to Central Wisconsin on a gorgeous fall day. We had clear sky, 10 mile visibility and zero turbulence for the entire 1,000 mile journey. With weather like this being presented to us we just had to take advantage, so we decided to fly the Hudson River Corridor. As we approached the Hudson we dialed in LaGuardia Tower and obtained clearance. The Hudson VFR Corridor is a special flight route that allows pilots to fly down the Hudson River along Manhattan without interfering with the multitude of airliners traversing the area via the three conjoined Class B airports in the New York metro area.

Before flying this corridor I never realized the amount of industry associated with the river and the New York Harbor. The Harbor's roots date back to the 1600's and has a long rich but not always positive history. Here is a great link to a brief more in-depth history. www.worldatlas.com/heritage-sites/new-york-harbor

The Port of New York (and New Jersey) is the largest oil importing port and third largest container port in the U.S. Container Terminals: Port Newark Container Terminal, Maher Terminals, APM Terminals, GCT New York Terminal, GCT Bayonne Terminal, and Red Hook Container Terminal. Primary cargo: Containers, RoRo, Breakbulk,?Dimensional Cargo, General Cargo, and Breakbulk. The harbor is still served by port and marine rail, cruise lines, commuter ferries, and tourist excursion boats. (Dan-Bunkering)

The Port generates more than 500,000 jobs, and almost $100 billion in business income.?(Dan-Bunkering)

Also, Manhattan has?nearly 50,000?buildings, 241 million square feet of which represent office space. It is home to 250,000 different companies, and 491 of them are publicly listed corporations. This has become a major part of condition monitoring as well. This includes HVAC, clean room environments in electronic industry and data centres.

I hope you enjoyed your flight and I look forward to sharing again with you all soon. Until then, Blue Skies and Tailwinds!!

I hope you enjoy some of the pictures I took while on this flight.
