Low-code versus .....low-code

So, anything with a visual drag-and-drop IDE is now low-code. Mmm. I obviously don't agree. What's your take? When I joined Pega, none of the RPA vendors were calling their IDEs and tools low-code, so what happened?
Clearly, it is what it is, anything on a computer that can be built or automated with a visual drag and drop is now low-code! But is it?
I have always felt, when I was first introduced to low-code and no-code, that it was something so much more. Like the 4GL era but on steroids! The "low-code / no-code" ability for "citizen developers" to create powerful brand new enterprise grade digital applications, from scratch without writing any code. Gone are the days that building applications would be considered "Big ticket" items with "long lead" times and frequent "miscommunication" of requirements. The end of customizing applications a hundred times over to create legacy spaghetti for years to come. Low-code applications built 10x faster at 10x less cost in weeks rather than years and with full real-time collaboration between business, developers and IT. With an ability for the apps to be instantly visualized and runable on any hardware, on-premise or on-cloud with almost just a flick of a switch. The no-code creativity for applications to support any kind of digital input or output, that runs on any device, in any place, with any type of look and feel UI. These digital apps from the low-code model would revolutionize and replace legacy systems for good and truly be the foundation of the "digital automation" of the enterprise, from the center-out. Automating one process or Micro Journey at a time with a purpose of instantly serving a better outcome for internal and external customers alike!
Of course, a true low-code model would drive business, developers and IT together to enable these applications to be built rapidly, on an infrastructure that is highly secure and governed to make this a reality. Whilst all the time, providing the instant ability to scale beyond millions of customers and tens of thousands of users.
So, whilst even switching my kettle on might be considered low-code today, not all low-code is alike!

4 年Francis Carden as mush as I agree with you boss. I think it really doesn't matter what we (outcast-renegades) realist believe/know. Over-inflated Marketing has created grey areas & diluted definitions....

4 年Francis Carden you drag & drop & then you code inside those drag & drop elements. So damn true. Low code is an illusion. Only a few does it right. More power to you.
