We are sitting was too much. Of course, we know this, but sometimes we feel that there is nothing we can do about it. However, the lack of movement with sitting is one of the primary culprits of our back pain.

When we sit our butt muscles turn off, and our spinal muscles are forced to do the extra work. The problem is that the butt muscles are a prime mover and supporter of our dynamic posture, so turning them "off" forces the more endurance based muscle set (the spinal muscles) to do a job above their pay grade.

The other issue with our butt muscles taking a break is that the hydration to these muscles slows down. So slower hydration equals less new blood flow, and less new blood means the suppleness and mobility begin to disappear. Ever notice when you stand up after sitting for an extended period that your butt and lower back feel as if they move as one large unit?

No worries though, this can easily be prevented from this exercise. Take 10-15 minutes out of your day and try this exercise against the wall or on the floor. Make sure to do all three positions and feel which one is more painful. This is important because it will help you realize where your exact pain is coming from. The cool thing with mobility exercises is that you will feel much better once you are done. So you can use this feedback to decide when you want to do them again. Doing them before you sleep might help you sleep better, or when you wake up could help kick-start your day, and after lunch might make you more productive! Every option is excellent, and many times my clients choose a few of them.
