Loved That Lynda.com Video? Here's How to Embed It In a Post on LinkedIn

While the process to embed a Lynda.com video on LinkedIn is not difficult, it can be a little tricky. This guide will walk you through the steps to embed any free Lynda.com video into your LinkedIn article.

Choose Unlocked/Free Videos

The most important step for successfully embedding a Lynda.com video is to make sure that the video that you wish to embed is unlocked and free for non-Lynda.com members. The easiest way to ensure that the video is free for all is to open up a private browsing window and visit the course page. If you see a lock next to the movie, you won't be able to embed it. Thankfully 10% of all videos are free for each course, so you will have a good selection to choose from. The welcome video is always free so that is a safe choice to make too.

Embedding a Lynda.com Video

  1. Start playing the movie back. Hit the pause button (or not), and then look for the </> characters in the upper-right corner of the movie window. That’s the control that brings up the embed code.
  2. Click this </> control, and the “embed this video” window appears, with a bunch of code already selected.
  3. Choose Edit > Copy to copy that code to the Clipboard.
  4. Switch over to your article. Move the blinking cursor to where you want the movie to appear, then, in the editor tool bar, click the <> characters to bring up the "Add rich media" dialog box.
  5. Choose Edit > Paste, then click the Add media button to paste the embed code into the article.

Example of a Video Embed

Here is the welcome movie to Jim Heid's Getting Started in Photography that I embedded in this post. Jim initially documented the steps to embed a Lynda.com movie for his photography authors so it made sense to include his course as the example below. Thanks for your help Jim!

I don't see a thumbnail/picture for the Lynda video embed. It's just a pitch black screen. Does the Lynda video embeds have the option to display a thumbnail before being played similar to the Youtube video embeds?

Thanks for the article, James. I would love to embed a movie from Turi McKinley's new release on Design Thinking in a post I'm about to publish, but I'm not seeing the lock option (to know which parts of the video are free) and even in the welcome video, I'm not finding the </> option. I just have the video playing. I've tried in two different browsers. Has anyone else struggled with this? Thanks! Once I figure it out, this is going to be awesome!
