#DidYouKnow… Approximately one in two women over age 50 will break a bone because of osteoporosis.
There are multiple reasons why women are more likely to get osteoporosis compared to men. Women tend to have smaller, thinner bones than men. Oestrogen, a hormone in women that protects bones, decreases sharply when women reach menopause, which can cause bone loss. This is why the chance of developing osteoporosis increases as women reach menopause.
Previously it was thought tha...t osteoporosis was an inevitable part of aging. However today we know a lot more about how to prevent, detect, and treat the disease.
If you want to know more about women's health issues, then come join the Rheumatology Department at their next ‘Love Your Bone - Patient and Public Conference’ on Wednesday 21st June 2017. The event will be held at the Mountbatten Centre, Alexandra Park Portsmouth from 10:00am.
For more information or to register for this year’s conference, contact the Rheumatology Department on [email protected] or 0239228 6142.
