Love what you do! Don't confuse service with sacrifice

This takes a toll on your love for the services you provide.

The Secret to moving forward towards your Career Success is learning how to find work that you would love to do as a service rather than a sacrifice!

When you do what you do, because you love it, and not because you think you are doing it for others , there’s more love and fulfillment in what you do - Fatima Williams

When you engage in a service or pursue a profession out of genuine love and passion for the work itself, rather than solely focusing on external recognition or the expectations of others, it can lead to a deeper sense of love and fulfillment in what you do.

I want to tell you the story of the recipient of the MacArthur Fellowship Award and an American medical anthropologist and physician. Dr. Paul Farmer, who held an MD and PhD from Harvard University,

From Sacrifice to Service: A Journey of Passion and Impact

In the year 1987, a group of remarkable individuals—Farmer, along with his colleagues from Harvard?Jim Yong Kim ,?Ophelia Dahl , Thomas J. White and Todd McCormackset out on a path that would change the face of global health forever, co-founded?Partners In Health —which now collaborates with governments across 11 countries to bring quality health care to those most in need.

They were young, barely out of their teens, but their hearts were filled with an unwavering passion to make a difference.

Their goal was simple yet profound: to bring quality healthcare to those most in need.

With this purpose burning within them, they joined the fight against COVID-19, and long before they helped battle Ebola in West Africa. Read?Bending the Arc?tells their story. ( Source https://www.pih.org/bending-the-arc )

Dr. Farmer loved his job so much he and his friend created a movement to make health care accessible for everyone.

The reason I shared his story, is to commemorate his memory as he passed on in Feb 2022 and I wanted to thank him for the ripple effect of love he created, in the form of service through an example of his work!

Dr. Farmer's work took him to the front lines of the AIDS epidemic in Haiti, where he faced numerous challenges, including lack of resources, political instability, and the stigma associated with the disease.

Dr. Farmer's story is a testament to the power of doing what you love and finding fulfillment in service. His passion for providing healthcare to the most vulnerable populations has saved countless lives and inspired a generation of healthcare professionals and activists to follow in his footsteps.

The story of Dr. Paul Farmer reminds us that true leadership and service come from a place of love and genuine dedication to a cause greater than oneself. By doing what he loved and believing in the value of every human life, he has left an indelible impact on global health and continues to inspire others to make a positive difference in the world.

Now, he did not look at his work as a sacrifice, that he was doing something for others, he did it because he loved doing it.

Embrace the secret of moving forward towards career success—find work that you would love to do as a service rather than a sacrifice.

Ask yourself what do I love doing and by doing what I love, how can I, impact first those around me and then the world!

While it's important to consider the needs and satisfaction of others in service-oriented roles, aligning your work with your own love and passion can bring an added level of fulfillment and make your service even more impactful.

For example:

In a recent post by Dr. Ali Anani, PhD , Harvey Lloyd a Leader, Self-taught Entrepreneur with over 30+ years of business owner & A dear friend wrote:-

Empathy is a service word. We do it to learn how to serve one another in a way that is meaningful.
But there is also another use for empathy I think we dont understand. Empathy is our own mirror to self. To see and share the depths of another’s journey helps us see our own.
Another aspect of empathy is opportunity. Opportunity is emergent from something. I would submit that empathy is the fundamental property of opportunity. Without it we would never be able to see opportunity.

Service to me is an opportunity to do something

Let's shift our perspective from viewing our jobs as a mere means to pay the bills to seeing them as opportunities to provide valuable service and make a positive impact.

This can have a profound effect on our career growth and personal fulfillment.

By reframing our mindset in this way, we can unlock a range of possibilities and create a more meaningful and purpose-driven approach to our work.

Opportunities can arise from your own personal growth, professional growth such as acquiring new skills, or expanding knowledge in a particular field.

As individuals when we develop our expertise, we may discover new opportunities for career advancement, entrepreneurship, or making a positive impact in our communities!

But we cannot pursue these opportunities if we look at our jobs as a sacrifice.

I am going to work because I need to pay the bills

Rather than saying that, You could say

I am going to work because I want to provide my skills as a service to my clients and to help my company grow. When my company grows I grow. This in turn helps me provide a better growing environment for my kids so they can become change makers and leaders in the world or whatever is the real reason you go to work everyday!

WHY DO YOU DO WHAT YOU DO?

Your Job role = Impact

By reframing our mindset and seeing our jobs as opportunities for growth, service, and impact, we can unlock our full potential, pursue new possibilities, and create a positive ripple effect in our lives and the lives of others.

Here's How you can stop looking at your job as a sacrifice you are making and a love affair with yourself:

  1. Find Your Intrinsic Motivation:

When you love what you do, your motivation comes from within.

You are driven by the joy and satisfaction that the work brings you, which can sustain your enthusiasm even during challenging times.

and then they will go on spreading to the further shores.” — Osho

Totally concur with you dear Fatima Williams (Assoc. CIPD HR) . Love what you do and do what you love. Pursue what you love as a service rather than as a sacrifice. If you do something as a service your level of contentment and happiness is manifolds as compared to something pursued as a sacrifice.
