As a single solo traveller in my forties and fifties, I have to say that romance and everything to do with Valentines Day was never something I engaged in. OK, at times I avoided all mention of it! However, that’s not to say I didn’t have any romantic liaisons on my adventures. I did and if that’s something you are looking for, I am here to share a little advice for you.
?
But also, my life is moving on, I am about to tie the knot again in May, so I figured now is maybe the time to dust off my romantic notions and dive in to the circus that is Valentines Day.
Deep breath…here we go!
Valentine’s Day isn’t just for flowers and chocolates—it’s also a great opportunity to explore love in all its forms. Whether you’re single and hoping to make romantic connections while travelling, or in a relationship and looking to reignite the spark with your partner, travel can be the perfect setting to embrace love and adventure.
Here’s my guide to help you make the most of romance on your travels, including tips for navigating midlife dating, romantic getaway ideas, and off-the-beaten-path destinations to add a little (or a lot of) love to your next trip.
For the Solo Traveller: Finding Romance While Exploring the World
Travelling solo doesn’t mean travelling alone forever. Trust me, romantic connections can happen when you least expect them, and exploring the world often provides the perfect opportunity to meet like-minded people. So, here are my top tips for making romantic connections while travelling:
Stay Open to New Experiences
Take that cooking class, join a group tour, or sit at the communal table in a local café. Shared experiences often lead to meaningful conversations.
Be Safe and Trust Your Gut
While meeting new people can be exciting, it’s important to prioritize your safety. Always meet in public places and trust your instincts. Never do anything you wouldn’t feel comfortable to do on a date back home. Get any contact information and share it with a trusted loved one. Make it obvious what you are doing. Send a photo. If your potential date is all above board, they should not have an issue with this. And when you are back safe and sound, make sure to let your loved one know!
Use Travel-Friendly Dating Apps
For example, apps like Bumble or Tinder will allow you to connect with locals or fellow travellers before or during your trip.
Look for Connection Through Shared Passions
Choose activities you love. Finding someone who shares your interests is a great starting point. Maybe use your trip as a way of learning a new skill and meeting a like-minded soul. Check out my list of 30 Adult Learning Vacations for inspiration HERE.
Stay in Social Accommodation
Boutique hostels, guesthouses, or eco-lodges often attract solo travellers who are open to meeting others. They are always my favourite choices for exactly that reason.
Don’t Expect Too Much
In my experience, sparks happen when you least expect them. If you go with a plan in mind, unless you are using a dating app, don’t expect that romance will be part of your trip. Enjoy it when it happens but don’t be disappointed when it doesn’t. You never know what is around the corner!
I did a search on the most romantic destinations in the world and number one on the list was Santorini in Greece. I have visited several times. It is stunning so just for a little self-indulgence, here is a photo from what in my view is the best thing to do on the island - hike from Fira to Oia.
For Couples: Adding Romance to Your Trip
Travelling with your partner offers endless opportunities to deepen your bond and create lasting memories. Even a simple getaway can be transformed into something magical with a bit of planning.
How to Add Romance to a Trip: Plan a Surprise - Arrange for a special dinner, a couple’s massage, or even a sunrise hot air balloon ride without telling your partner in advance.
Disconnect to Reconnect - Leave your devices behind and focus on being present with each other.
Include Personal Touches - Incorporate details that are meaningful to your relationship—visiting a destination tied to your story or recreating a favourite travel memory.
Choose Intimate Accommodations - Opt for boutique hotels, private villas, or cozy bed-and-breakfasts for a more personal experience.
Create Time for Spontaneity - Don’t over-schedule—leave space to explore together and see where the day takes you.
Celebrating Romance in Unexpected Ways
Some destinations around the world take Valentine’s Day (or romance in general) to another level. Here are a few ideas if you want to do the same:
? Verona, Italy: The city of Romeo and Juliet hosts a “Verona in Love” festival, with heart-shaped decorations, love-themed events, and special access to Juliet’s balcony.
? South Korea: South Korea celebrates several “love days” throughout the year, including White Day (March 14th) and Pepero Day (November 11th), where couples exchange sweets and gifts.
? Slovenia: On Valentine’s Day, locals celebrate “St. Gregory’s Day,” marking the start of spring with floating lanterns on rivers.
? India: Head to Udaipur, known as the “City of Lakes,” for a royal-inspired romantic experience with palaces, boat rides, and stunning sunsets.
Romance and travel can go hand in hand, whether you’re seeking new connections, reigniting the spark with a partner, or planning the honeymoon of your dreams. With a bit of planning and an open heart, your next adventure could lead to moments you’ll cherish
