Love Letter to Myself

One day everything was stripped away

The flames of injustice roared

Burning away my pride and entitlement

Burning away my walls of self-protection and everything in its path

Filled me with shame, guilt, and despair

Against the rubble, I knelt, head bowed, licking my wounded pride

While the flames silently yet violently devoured my life

Ego was its' false keeper

A lie built on shiny promises of glory and fear

All gone up in smoke

Tinsel shines brightly but is not silver

And all that glitters is not gold

When the smoke cleared

I looked down and blew away the ashes

There I saw my poor damaged heart 

laying naked and vulnerable on the floor

I gently scooped it up

And cradled it in my two hands like a newborn child

Despite its' injured state, it was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen

As I nursed it back to health

I made a promise to myself

No matter what

To never again to put it in harm's way

To protect it more fiercely 

Today my heart is still as fragile as always

Yet it is my most precious possession

And I guard it fiercely

Surrounded this time by an armor of light and higher power

That darkness can never penetrate

I am stronger now, much stronger

The scars have toughened me

I will guide others now

Show them the way

Never again, my love
