Love Letter to my City

Love Letter to my City

Good Morning Toronto

As I walked up Bay Street this morning, my city was just waking up. Street cars clanged as I passed King Street and food trucks were doing their early preparations for a day that promises the kind of sunny spring warmth that brings Toronto to life. Cleanup was underway from the sports trifecta street party last night that saw three of the city's beloved sports teams compete while the city gathered and cheered and celebrated. As I pass others on their way to work, I see the broad range of faces and backgrounds that makes Toronto so synonymous with diversity. As I look around at the city so shocked and saddened by tragedy earlier this week I'm struck by this city's quiet, steadfast, polite refusal to be cowed. #Torontostrong isn't about words of revenge or blame and even analysis of what happened. Toronto strong is about a group of people from all backgrounds and life experiences resolute in our commitment to a city that is safe and respectful and inclusive and supportive. It is about a city that refuses to blindly identify people as "the other" . We are Toronto the Good and for that, we are not sorry.

Ahmed.? I have a little dream of my own. I dream that, in the future, your first reaction won't have to be fear of judgement based on name or skin color or religion.? I dream that some day we will all be secure in the knowledge that as Canadians, we don't judge people on anything but the content of their character. As a? fellow Canadian, you don't have to Thank me for my words, you just need to be part of a group of people committed to fostering and nurturing a society that is open and tolerant and inclusive. We are lucky and blessed and we should always remember that, even as we strive to be better. Welcome again, to a great country that is just taping its potential to be a role model for the world. Lets build that together.?
