Love heavy equipment? We've got a job for you!

Working at Ritchie Bros. and IronPlanet: what our equipment inspector positions are all about.

Each year we help thousands of people around the world buy heavy equipment and trucks. And because our customers are busy working and running their businesses, often their buying journey is made either partly – or entirely – online.

That’s why a hugely important part of our business is to provide potential buyers with accurate information about equipment when they’re searching or browsing inventory on our Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers and IronPlanet websites – everything from the age and number of hours on a machine to overall condition. Our equipment inspectors are the ones responsible for recording that information and making sure it’s accurate.

Here’s a look at two different types of inspectors we’re currently filling roles for. If you love heavy equipment, these opportunities could be the perfect fit for you.

Equipment Inspector – Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers

As an equipment inspector at one of our permanent auction facilities, you don’t necessarily need a technical background in heavy equipment (although it’s a plus if you do), just a passion for heavy equipment and an eye for detail.

Part of our Detailed Equipment Information (DEI) team, equipment inspectors, are based at an auction site, and perform accurate and thorough visual inspections (e.g. wear points, damage, hour meter readings, etc.) and functional testing (e.g. basic operations) on heavy equipment on a daily basis. Depending on workload and auction schedules, they sometimes travel to other auction sites in their region to help out and often assist the sales team on equipment appraisals in the field.

They have access to a vast array of industry-leading technology to help them record, photograph, and log all the relevant details of a machine, but this is still a very hands-on job as they’re literally in, out, on top of, and underneath equipment all day. It’s a busy, fast-paced job and as an equipment inspector you’re the boots-on-the-ground - and eyes and ears for buyers who need those details to make an informed decision.

IronClad Assurance? Equipment Inspector – IronPlanet

Our IronClad Assurance? is an industry-leading equipment condition certification that we offer on machines. Buyers can view this comprehensive report online, and they know that what they see in the report is what they’ll get when they receive the item.

Moreover, we have a whole team of highly-qualified, experienced inspectors who produce these reports. Our IronClad Assurance? inspectors have backgrounds with formal training as heavy equipment mechanics or specialized technicians. These inspectors are not fixed to an auction facility, as they travel to customers’ locations around North America to personally inspect equipment the customer is selling online.

Much like our DEI team, IronClad Assurance? inspectors follow a standardized, reliable and consistent method of evaluation, but even more comprehensive. For each piece of equipment they inspect, they’ll take an average of 80 photographs, shoot video, take measurements, and provide oil and fluid samples from major components and systems (later analyzed for contaminants and wear metals). They’ll also include component level ratings and comments for key systems and functional test results.

Inspectors are armed with the latest technology to help them do their job and produce accurate reports, but they also have an eye for detail that’s second-to-none. Through these comprehensive inspection reports, our IronClad Assurance? inspectors instill the confidence our buyers need to purchase equipment from all over the world sight unseen.
