Love in the Darkest of Times: Celebrating Connection, Resilience, and Hope

Love in the Darkest of Times: Celebrating Connection, Resilience, and Hope

Three years ago this month, I boarded a plane to Nairobi, Kenya, to meet a client and deliver a cell phone. That simple journey would become one of the most profound events of my life. In Nairobi, I met Abba Henry, Leading Africans to Financial Freedom , my business partner and now dearest friend, who would go on to become the CEO and Co-Founder of the Diamond Mine Academy—a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to saving the lives of LGBTQ Africans facing persecution under the Anti-Homosexuality Act of 2023.

As I reflect on the past three years with Abba, I’m struck by how transformative our journey together has been. Meeting Abba felt like stepping into a world of love, hope, and possibility that I hadn’t fully experienced before. In his words, “Meeting you was like stepping into a world where everything suddenly felt possible, a world full of love, hope, and meaning.” Our connection felt magical—a meeting of hearts that transcended the boundaries of circumstance and geography. Through this bond, I experienced unconditional love for the first time, and it’s the power of that love that has carried us through every challenge we’ve faced.

Today, in the wake of recent election results that have left many feeling defeated, fearful, and divided, I want to share some thoughts on reconciliation and hope, inspired by Abba’s story and our shared journey.

?Navigating Adversity with Love as Our Guide

Abba’s story is one of resilience, defiance, and love in the face of unimaginable challenges. Growing up in a country where being gay is punishable by death, he has lived with fear and isolation as constant companions. But as Abba shared with me, love—real, unconditional love—became his anchor. He describes it as a force “that allowed me to survive and even thrive in the face of such danger.” For Abba, love became a silent act of rebellion against the forces that sought to erase his humanity. It was a way of saying, I am here. I matter. My love matters.

In a place where the government demands silence, love became his voice. And for so many of us feeling a similar loss, fear, and isolation right now, Abba’s story is a reminder of the strength that lies within us. Love does not just sustain us; it empowers us to embrace our full selves, to find courage we didn’t know we had, and to keep going even in a world that may feel hostile.

Choosing Compassion Over Division in Difficult Times

The election results were not just a loss of opportunity for our country and the world; they were also a heartbreak that exposed the deep divisions within our nation. It’s easy to be angry or to feel betrayed by those who have made choices we don’t understand. But as I’ve learned from Abba and my own journey, the path forward is not through division, but through empathy, compassion, and unconditional love.?

In my conversations with friends and family who voted differently, I’ve come to realize that, for many, this choice wasn’t about endorsing a dictator—it was about feeling seen, heard, and valued. Abba’s message to the American people, in these trying times, resonates deeply. He says, “The people hold the power. You have the power to choose hope over despair, love over hate, solidarity over division.” His words remind me that we need to cut through the finger-pointing and name-calling, to truly listen to one another and build bridges of understanding.

Loving the Unloved Parts of Ourselves and Others

One of the greatest challenges in times like these is learning to love the unloved parts of ourselves—and of others. We are often quick to judge, to see only what we don’t like, to close ourselves off from people who think or act differently. But when we love unconditionally, we begin to break down those walls. We start to see that no one is truly “other,” that everyone is deserving of love and acceptance.

I’m committed to doing my own shadow work, to embrace the parts of myself I don’t always want to see, because I know that when I find peace within, I can’t help but love and accept everyone as they are. This is the mission of The Christ Project: to teach everyone the power of unconditional love. Imagine navigating life without judgment, without anger—just as a human being who is free to love, to be at peace, and to bring out the best in others.

Moving Forward: A Call for Unity and Compassion

As Abba so powerfully reminds us, “Hope is not lost. Love, truth, and justice have always had a way of prevailing—even in the darkest of times.” Even when the road feels uncertain, and the fear of losing freedoms looms large, we have the power to choose our response. We can let fear divide us, or we can let love bring us together.

The truth is, the strength of the human spirit, the desire for justice, and the yearning for equality can never be fully silenced. Abba and I have seen the power of love firsthand, in a world that sometimes feels designed to crush it. And we’ve learned that in the darkest times, love is not just a feeling; it’s an active force that we can cultivate through our actions, our words, and our hearts.

Let us lean into our communities, find strength in each other, and remember that hope isn’t just a distant dream—it’s something we create in every choice we make. As Abba said, “Love is what sustains us, and even when it feels like the world is closing in, the power of love is the one thing that can never be extinguished.”

A Path of Reconciliation and Unconditional Love

As I look forward, my commitment is to listen with empathy and understanding. I will approach my conversations with compassion, and I will do the work within myself to make sure that love, not judgment, guides my interactions. To my fellow Americans who feel fearful, angry, or disappointed, let’s remember that we are all in this together. No one is truly good or bad; we’re each responsible for the evolution of humanity.

Imagine if we could all love unconditionally—ourselves, each other, even those parts of us we don’t like. What would it feel like to move through life without judgment, embracing both the loved and the unloved? This is the path to a life of true peace, and it’s a path I invite each of you to explore.
