Love is the Answer…
Love. It’s a fascinating subject that has occupied the attention of poets, priests, philosophers and mystics for millennia. Now it’s the turn of behavioural scientists to explore the way that love influences so many aspects of our lives. Of course, it’s a challenging area to explore because we’re bombarded by a constant stream of images and ideas about love that distort our understanding of its nature whilst creating expectations that can never be fulfilled. If that sounds a little pessimistic, that is not my intention. Allow me to explain.
In many ancient traditions and in countless civilisations, love was viewed as a sacred energy that underpinned all reality. Have you come across this idea before? The conclusion from thousands of years of meditation and exploration was that love, in its purest form, provides the basis for all that exists. I know. It’s a very strange notion that hardly fits our contemporary understanding of physics. Yet, the idea persisted because it encourages us to understand reality in deeper, symbolic terms that help us to tap into the deeper layers of love’s enduring potential.
Unlike any other quality we can think of, love has no opposite. It is unique and a force for creation and transformation. These might not appear to be the most romantic interpretations of our modern, rose-tinted understanding of love. But the concept can help us to appreciate the singular power of unconditional love, a way of experiencing life that enriches our connections with every living creature, including the way that we see ourselves. That’s why it offers the promise of a better world for everyone to share.
In our culture, we subconsciously accept the notion of transactional exchanges within all of our relationships. We give in order to receive and keep a secret tally of what’s owed. This is not unconditional love. It’s one way of maintaining a relationship but it can only be viewed as a purely superficial connection that fails to draw its strength from the roots of unconditional love.
So, we can conclude that unconditional love is a very rare phenomenon. And that is why I’m suggesting that we all need to explore its potential and seek ways to introduce its life-enhancing power into our lives. The ancients declared that this ultimate expression of reality was sacred. What better way to touch the divine within your own heart and spark a revolution in your health, happiness, wellbeing and fulfilment.
