If That Was Love
This week, it is ‘If That Was Love’ by Neptune Rain.
‘If That Was Love’ was the debut single from Gloucester-based rock band, Neptune Rain. The track came out on July 19th, 2020 and yesterday was the 1 year anniversary of the release.?
What I loved about the song is that it is a perfect all-rounder in terms of the band’s sound and the influences that they all share such as Linkin Park, Bring Me The Horizon, and the early to mid-2000s alternative rock scene. Kieran’s rapping pays a huge amount of honour to Chester Bennington, an influence that has been held close to the band ever since they started with their ‘Shadow Of The Day’ cover, which I also recommend that you check out. The guitar work from Simon and their previous member provides the song with a heavier backbone along with the aggressive rock style drums and Rob’s bass work giving the song some extra beefiness as the song progresses.
The song itself talks about the theme of heartbreak and falling back into an unhealthy relationship. A good example is in the lyric “and you might wear the smile that put warmth in my own, but if I kiss those lips, there’ll be no antidote”. It brings out this idea of the narrator being the fly and the heartbreak or the person being a venus flytrap and if the narrator gets too close, they will become its prey.
Be sure to check out ‘If That Was Love’ by Neptune Rain from their debut EP, ‘Chaos and Light’ and keep out for their new single, ‘Bitter Pill’.
