Swipe Right on AI: How a Tech Whiz Found Love with a Little Digital Help
In Moscow, 2021, Aleksandr Zhadan tapped into AI, using OpenAI's GPT models to refine his Tinder experience. His AI assistant engaged with 5,239 women, leading to over 100 dates and eventually, meeting his future wife, Karina Vyalshakaeva. This AI was more than a chatbot; it was a personalized matchmaker, managing conversations and schedules based on Aleksandr's preferences.
Despite initial challenges in understanding social cues, the AI improved, playing a pivotal role in their journey from online chats to an in-person relationship, and finally, to engagement—a suggestion from the AI itself.
Karina's discovery of the AI's role only added to their unique story, appreciating the blend of technology and personal touch. While the idea hasn't become a commercial project, it highlights the innovative ways AI can influence personal connections, sparking discussions on the implications for dating and technology ethics.
Their story is a modern nod to the unexpected paths to finding love, courtesy of AI.
Code Meets Scrolls: What- Julius Caesar's father-in-law owned it?
In a thrilling turn of events, a trio of tech-savvy students cracked ancient secrets, deciphering over 2,000 Greek letters from a Vesuvius-buried scroll, earning a nice $700,000 prize. This ancient scroll from 79 AD, was previously unreadable due to damage from the Mount Vesuvius eruption. This scroll, possibly owned by Julius Caesar's father-in-law, offers insights into ancient music and food. It's considered a significant discovery in Greek philosophy, potentially authored by Philodemus, an Epicurean philosopher. Found in the 18th century, these scrolls were too fragile to handle until a team led by Dr. Brent Seales used CT scans for virtual unrolling. The students developed an AI to detect faded ink, revealing the Greek characters and promising future revelations from this historical treasure.
& off course, Musk got wind of it...
Joining the tech-meets-history adventure, Elon Musk has pledged to generously fund "The Vesuvius Challenge," aimed at using AI to unlock the secrets of ancient Roman scrolls damaged by Vesuvius's wrath. Spearheaded by Nat Friedman, this project has already seen AI turn unreadable fragments into readable text. With Musk's backing, the ambition scales up: fully deciphering one scroll could cost $2M, and revealing the mysteries of all 800 could hit $10M. This initiative stands as a groundbreaking intersection of historical research and AI, poised to unveil centuries-old insights into ancient Roman life.

What do you get when you combine a driver wearing the goggles while driving a Cybertruck?
The launch of the Tesla Cybertruck and Apple Vision Pro goggles has sparked debate, following sightings of a driver wearing the goggles while driving the Cybertruck. U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg and Apple have both emphasised that driving requires full attention, discouraging the use of such augmented-reality devices behind the wheel. Despite some claims of using the goggles in brief transparent mode, the risks and distractions they present, coupled with the potential for misuse, underline the importance of focusing solely on driving for safety.

Deepfake Drama: How a Virtual CFO Pulled Off a Multi-Million Dollar Heist Without Leaving the Digital World
A multinational company's Hong Kong office fell victim to a sophisticated scam, losing HK$200 million (US$25.6 million) through a deep fake technology exploit. Scammers created a fake video conference featuring a digital imitation of the company's CFO and other employees, convincing an employee to make 15 transfers to fraudulent accounts. This incident, a first of its kind in Hong Kong, highlights the escalating challenges deep fakes pose, blurring the lines between real and fabricated content. The scam, uncovered following a phishing attempt, is under investigation by Hong Kong police, who have yet to make any arrests. This event underscores the urgent need for individuals and organisations to adopt stringent measures for verifying identities in digital communications, amidst growing concerns over AI's misuse. Be careful out there!

and I leave you with something daft...
Ever thought of translating chicken clucks into plain English? Researchers at Dalhousie University are doing just that, diving into the world of chicken communication with a dash of AI magic. They're uncovering that chicken chatter is more than just random noise; it's a complex dialogue. Picture this: understanding every cluck, purr, and squawk could lead to a revolution in poultry farming, making for some seriously content chickens. It's not just about deciphering the chicken code; it's about improving their lives and, in turn, our farming practices. So, next time you hear a chicken, remember it might just be commenting on the weather, not just laying another egg.
Daft, but makes sense. I am ready to put on my wetsuit and talk with a dolphin.
My favourite quote of the week
"I speak to somebody and they say, 'You know what, AI is going to cure cancer on Wednesday.' Then I will talk to somebody and they'll say, 'It really doesn't matter — AI is going to end civilisation on Tuesday.' "
Alejandro Mayorkas, United States Secretary of Homeland Security
Ah the yin and yang of ai....emphasizing the sharply contrasting views and outcomes associated with its development and application.
