Loud Quitting: What It is and Why are Employees Doing It?

Loud quitting is a workplace trend where employees are openly expressing their dissatisfaction with their jobs and making it public. Unlike quiet quitting where employees disengage silently while continuing their employment, loud quitting is vocal and often dramatic.

These employees may publicly tarnish their company image, refuse to do certain tasks or stage a public resignation, sometimes announcing their departure on social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram or LinkedIn before even telling their employer. This trend is not just about quitting a job, it's about making a statement and being heard. According to Gallup's State of the Global Workplace 2023 report, 1 in 5 global employees are disengaged and are exhibiting loud quitting behaviors.

However, loud quitting has negative impact on both employees and employers. It damages a company’s reputation, making harder to attract top talent. On the other hand, companies typically avoid hiring individuals who engaged in loud quitting in their previous jobs to protect their image. In short both companies and employees have a lot to lose from this.

Why do employees loud quit?

The reasons are often deep rooted in the workplace. Here are some of the main ones:

  1. Unfair Treatment: Employees who feel they are being treated unfairly - whether through discrimination, unequal pay or lack of recognition - can get increasingly frustrated. When their concerns are not addressed they may loud quit to draw attention to these injustices.

2. Toxic Work Environment: A workplace with harassment, bullying or a negative culture can push employees to the edge. If they feel their complaints are ignored or mishandled they may choose to speak up publicly as a form of protest.

3. No Growth Opportunities: Employees who see no clear path for career advancement or feel stuck in their role are more likely to disengage. When this frustration is compounded by poor leadership or lack of support for professional development it can lead to loud quitting as a way to express dissatisfaction and force change.

In the end loud quitting is often a symptom of deeper issues in the organization. When employees feel undervalued, unheard or trapped they may choose to leave in a way that makes sure their complaints are public so organizations need to address these underlying issues to have a positive and productive work environment.
