There is NOTHING wrong with you feeling confused, lost and indecisive about your career path.
We get so busy chasing what society tells us: money, title, power. No wonder it's confusing and exhausting.
I should know. I did a job for over 24 years that I didn't enjoy. So, I know a thing or two about being frustrated.
I had enough.
I decided to make a change...BUT
In the winding maze of career choices...
It's easy to feel lost and unsure of your direction.
There is a fix! Finding career clarity lies the key to unlocking your true potential.
That's what I did. I embarked on gaining career clarity.
Here is a summary of what I did.
It was a journey of self-discovery and empowerment.
I realised that if I was to change my career direction, I needed to own it.
No one will care about your career as much as you.
I took control back and embarked on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment.
My career clarity journey
Acknowledging the Lost Phase:
The first step towards career clarity is acknowledging that something doesn't feel right and you feel lost. It's normal to experience doubt and confusion, as career paths are rarely linear. Allow yourself to explore this period and understand that it's an opportunity for growth. Don't shy away or park your feelings.
Some of the tell-tale signs include not being passionate about your work. Nothing ignites excitement. You dread Mondays. You are apathetic.
Self-Reflection and Evaluation
Next, to gain career clarity, introspection is critical. Reflect on your wants, passions, and values. Identify the activities that energise you, the skills you excel at, and the areas where you struggle. Conduct a thorough evaluation of your strengths and weaknesses to understand your unique talents and areas for improvement.
Exploring and Experimenting
Once you better understand yourself, it's time to explore different career options. Look at the job descriptions in the market and match them to your evaluation. Update your CV, identify your transferrable skills and try to apply for those roles (you can always say No!). Engage in informational interviews, shadow professionals in industries of interest, or consider short-term internships. These experiences will provide valuable insights and help you make informed decisions about potential career paths.
The most crucial aspect here is to TAKE action..imperfect action.

If you sit and wait until you HAVE all the skills, qualifications and work experience, you might be waiting for a while.
Seeking Guidance and Getting a Coach or Mentor
Don't hesitate to seek guidance from mentors or career coaches who can provide objective perspectives and advice. Their experience and expertise can help you navigate the complexities of the job market, identify hidden opportunities, and make informed choices.
A tip is to get someone who's walked the path. You don't want to learn from textbooks & couch coaches.
Embracing Continuous Learning
Career clarity is not a destination but an ongoing journey. Invest in personal and professional development by acquiring new skills, attending workshops or seminars, and pursuing relevant certifications. Continuous learning will expand your horizons and open up new career possibilities.
Final thoughts
While self-reflection and exploration are crucial, taking action is essential to gaining career clarity. Making decisions, even imperfect or requiring course corrections along the way, will propel you forward. Through action, you learn what resonates with you and what doesn't.
I started coaching for free, with no experience in learning the craft. I had two people turn up to a FREE webinar. I just kept showing up.
That's how I transitioned from a senior finance executive to a career coach. I left corporate life after over 24 years of experience and, at age 45, with financial responsibilities.
So I don't accept anyone that says, "It's too late!".
Nothing is impossible. You have to make wise choices and take action.
Career clarity involves a willingness to take risks and embrace failure as part of the learning process. Not every decision will lead to immediate success, but perceived "failures" can provide valuable lessons and steer you towards the right path.
Be open to adapting your plans and goals based on your evolving understanding of what truly fulfils you.
Gaining career clarity is a transformative journey that requires self-reflection, exploration, guidance, continuous learning, and, above all, taking action.
You can align your career with your passions and purpose by understanding your wants, likes, dislikes, strengths, and gaps.
Remember, the path to clarity may be challenging, but each step forward brings you closer to a fulfilling and meaningful career. So, embrace the unknown, make informed decisions, and take action towards building the career you deserve.
I should know that if I didn't take the leap of faith, I would still suffer chronic stress, bad health, and depression.
