The "Lost World" of Un-Structure Training.
(A key to long term, high level performance)
Today, most training is overly "structure and planned" on the level of drills, exercises, sets and reps.
Yet, athlete autonomy and free play are crucial aspects defining the ceiling of skilled athletic performance.
Nick Wills, who has run a sub 4-mile for 20 consecutive years posted this gem recently
Taking 4-6 weeks of informal training per year.
Nick went on to say:
This dial is helpful in sports like track and swimming, to turn at key points in the year, or in a career.
Matt Hemingway's high jump career was revitalized by playing basketball.
Basketball itself is an amazing "informal"
Prep method for high jump in track and field.
Research from Roc, Williams and Ford showed that better soccer players had accumulated more free play in the youth, VS less reactive players on the field.
Obviously, not all training is "free play" but understanding the importance of Un-scripted, or play-based movement in a year and. Career is a key to longevity and joy in the training process.
