Lost in Space. Or Not.

Like most people, I’m not following what is or isn’t happening at the International Space Station. I might be able to pick Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams out of a photo montage, but only if they were posing in flight suits and floating weightless.

If none of this is ringing a bell, you are forgiven. Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams are the two astronauts who took Boeing’s cool new toy, the Starliner, for a test drive a few weeks back and now find themselves on an extended stay at the ISS. How long?? Oooh, maybe until February.

If you like drama and are rooting for someone to shovel even more dirt on Boeing’s severely damaged reputation, your bingo card got filled on this one.

But consider this. People like Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams train their entire professional careers to spend time in space. There’s a lineup of people hanging around down here who would trade places with them in a heartbeat.

There’s a guy who runs a car company, a space company, and a toxic social platform who thinks they’re not nearly far enough away.

Two astronauts in waiting will likely miss their chance because their seats on the next rocket will have to be left vacant so the wayward space tourists can hitch a ride home.

They’re not stranded. They’re just getting some bonus time doing the thing they love doing.

Perspective is everything. Stranded is a state of mind. So is “doing what I love.”
