The Lost Great Designers

Once upon a time, there was a land with great open plains where Great Wild Designers would roam, they would create?"Magic"?under these wide-open blue skies, and?"Magic"?that has never been seen before!. These lost Designers were a far, far different Character of Designer than today, they were indeed wild!, not reliant by a Computer, they would engage heavily with experimentation and push a "Design to its limits", their wild creations were a mirror of their own character!?

Their habit was a?" Temple build for Experimentation", a wild mess of Rough Designs hung from the walls with hardly any wall to be seen, a wild collage of abstract idea, scribbles hung from every part of the Temple, the walls were a testament of what was being created. Their Studios were indeed a chaotic mess, with a smell of Magic makers. These studios were a meeting place, a place not only to present ideas but to begin a fantastic night, and a place to return to afterwards. Today if you venture into a Design studio it just like walking into the research department of silicon valley, it's sterile, gone are the wild walls full of Creations, replaced by singular tiny computers, gone are the magic makers, the pencils, you would be hard-pressed today to even find a colour marker or indeed a basic pencil in any studio. Gone is that " vibration of noise and colour", the studios today are silent, God, this would be the last place on earth I would want to work at, and indeed the last kind of Studio I would engage with to market my great product!!!

The making of such Wild Designer is easy to see, some had the luck to hit the profession in the 1960s, God, it was great, or like me, they had that perfect timing to hit the market in the early 1980s and in London, this was in need " Design Heaven" a perfect time and a perfect place to live and create.?To be a Great Designer one must firstly be a Great Magician, it's all about?" Visual Illusion", it's about placing people in a wonderful environment where you can create a " Show Like No Other"! Now, to be a Great Magician you need an?Unprecedented Stage Presence, not all have it!, that's why they are so great, I have it! and yes, it's both ok and healthy to " blow one's own trumpet!" especially in business where money is concerned! Having a " Great Stage Presence" is how the Designer wins the Clients attention, but that's just the beginning, you need to gain your client's trust and belief, that's the hard part, but an exciting part.

If you do not take to the stage like Tom Cruise(who is a magnificent actor) in his Mission Impossible, your clients " Just Aint Gonna Believe " in you and your Company no matter how great it is, it has to be lead from the front and that means the CEO, the owners, had better be World-Class Actors!

I would say I possess an " Unrivalled Passion" for the " Dramatic, Stylish entrances", and with the ability to deliver "death-defining acts of entertainment". Most Design companies I have come across have absolutely no idea about creativity and utterly no understanding of what the word creating means! Being creative is taking what is the " Norm", normal, and take it out of its " solid-state" environment and place it in to an " incredible fluid motion state, a state of shifting your "evaluation of the product", to make you feel you "Need Me" that delectable product, service in your life

Being Creative means projecting your character, your talent in its utmost in to the process of making people seeing a product in a different way, that is no easy order to fill believe me. This takes real character, a risk-taker most definitely, nothing changes into Gold easily, it takes energy to make a living wonder!

The only " Organisational Technology " that is tangible is "Creativity", not " Hot Air" in some dull and dreary board room, we want to see real creation, not trendy philosophies being bounced around, or ideas that have been " regurgitated" from design consultancy to design consultancy, we want ideas so hot they set off the fire sprinklers, does that happen in the, meeting with your design consultancy, if not, I'd look else ware to some better design action, remember your calling the shots here!

Remember, the best designs are wild, crazy, not scared of breaking design conceptions, they are extremely humorous ,and by God, when they invite you to their studio it's a monumental moment to be remembered and to be recommend to others, that, that alone creates great Design and Great business. Good Hunting!

I’m not far behind your generation and my thoughts are the same… I’m not against computers but coming from a “manual” background where photos were actually illustrations and texts were calligraphed, I keep this logic of work where human being and most importantly human mistakes are a priority… that’s the only way to preserve the magic.. then the computer can be this extra tool that anchors me back into the reality of deadlines, printing, etc.. Interesting reading your newsletter! Take care Pascal
