Lost Generation: Why young generations losing Logic

Lost Generation: Why young generations losing Logic

A recent news of a young boy losing his life during a protest is deeply saddening. This tragic incident underscores a concerning trend: the rise of violent protests involving young people.

For the past three decades, I am teaching and interacting with young students. Through this experience, I've observed a troubling shift: a growing preference for violent protests over logical reasoning and critical thinking as a means for expressing dissent. There has been a disturbing trend of increasing violence and aggression among youth, often manifested in protests that escalate into chaotic and destructive events. This alarming shift from peaceful demonstrations to confrontations with law enforcement and property damage raises critical questions about the factors driving such behavior. A crucial question: who bears responsibility for this troubling trend? Is it the parents, the broader society, the schools, or the educators themselves?

This question is quite alarming, complex and multifaceted. While there is no single culprit, several key factors contribute to the problem. Determining the root cause is vital if we are to effectively address this issue.

Social & Cultural

a)????? The systemic injustices and inequalities plaguing our society leave youth marginalised and denied their rightful place, hindered by societal biases and convoluted legal processes.

b)????? Inequality i.e. Social and economic disparities can create feelings of resentment and marginalisation, fuelling violence.

c)????? Parents and schools have a responsibility to foster critical thinking, empathy, and civic engagement. If educational institutions fail to provide adequate opportunities for students to develop these skills, they may be more susceptible to radicalisation and violence. The decline in parental and teacher guidance is contributing to a moral and ethical vacuum among young people.

d)????? Constant exposure to violence in electronic and different platforms of social media and society can desensitise young people and normalise violent behaviour. The media plays a significant role in shaping public opinion and influencing societal attitudes. If media outlets sensationalise violence or portray aggressive behaviour in a positive light, it can contribute to a culture of aggression and intolerance.

Socioeconomic Factors:

a)????? Lack of economic opportunities can lead to frustration, desperation, and involvement in criminal activities

Political and Social Factors:

a)????? Frequent political turmoil and instability is creating an environment of uncertainty and fear, leading to aggression and violence.

b)????? Exposure to extremist ideologies can distort young people's worldview and promote violence as a means to achieve their goals.

c)????? Weak Governance, corruption, and lack of rule of law can erode trust in institutions and contribute to a breakdown of social order.

To create a more peaceful and just society for future generations a comprehensive approach is imperative to tackle this growing problem. Policymakers and stakeholders must prioritise the following areas.

a)????? Schools, parents, and communities should work together to foster positive youth development.

b)????? Teachers should prioritise the development of emotional intelligence among students.

c)????? Encourage students to participate in civic activities and peaceful protests.

d)????? Implement policies that promote economic equality, social justice, and political participation.

e)????? The media should play a constructive role in shaping public discourse and promoting positive social values.

The future depends on what you do today………Mahatma Gandhi
