Lost and Found: The Search for Meaning in the Chaos of a Woman’s Life

Ladies, let’s talk. Somewhere between the 37th email of the day, the half-drunk cup of cold coffee, and your third attempt at folding a fitted sheet, it hits you: What am I even doing with my life?

Cue the existential spiral. Suddenly, you’re Googling “how to find purpose” while simultaneously trying to remember if you thawed chicken for dinner. Don’t worry, you’re not alone. We’ve all been there. And the world has plenty of “solutions” to offer us busy, meaning-seeking women.

The Many “Therapies” Women Try on Their Quest for Meaning

  1. Retail Therapy Ah yes, the sacred pilgrimage to the holy land of Target. You go in for toothpaste and come out with fairy lights, a yoga mat (because this is the week you’ll start!), and a mug that says “Live, Laugh, Love.” Spoiler alert: the mug will not, in fact, fix your existential crisis.
  2. Wine Therapy “Purpose might be at the bottom of this glass,” you think, pouring that third glass of Merlot. By the time you reach the bottom, you’ve decided you’re either a misunderstood genius or need to quit your job and become a goat farmer. (Note: Do NOT Google “how to buy a goat” after wine therapy.)
  3. Pinterest Therapy What starts as a quick search for “inspirational quotes” spirals into a board titled “New Me 2024” featuring color-coded planners, vision boards, and 17 different quinoa recipes. By the end, you’re overwhelmed, hungry, and still don’t know what a vision board actually does.
  4. Spa Therapy You book a massage to “relax and recharge.” Five minutes in, the therapist says, “Wow, your shoulders are really tense.” Yes, Karen, they are! I’m carrying my family’s emotional baggage, a to-do list the size of a novella, and the crushing weight of societal expectations! Thanks for noticing.
  5. Self-Help Book Therapy With titles like “Unleash Your Inner Goddess” or “Find Your Joy by Friday,” these books promise the answers. You read two chapters, underline some quotes, then forget it on your nightstand under a pile of laundry. Joy remains un-located.

The Diagnosis of Modern Womanhood

It seems society has diagnosed us with a long list of “conditions,” including:

  • Superwoman Syndrome: The belief you must do it all—and flawlessly.
  • Perfection Paralysis: Spends 40 minutes choosing the perfect font for the family Christmas card.
  • Comparisonitis: “Look at her Instagram life! Why can’t I be that happy while making sourdough bread in a linen dress?”
  • Purpose Deficiency Disorder: A chronic feeling of “there must be more to life than this,” usually triggered while unloading the dishwasher.

Let’s be real, ladies. Sometimes we’re looking for meaning in all the wrong places (I see you Googling “life-changing retreats in Bali”).
