Lost & Clueless?

Place yourself in the shoes of an innocent English learner and look up a grammar term like 'subject complement' on the internet. I did, and this is what I found:

a word or a group of words, usually functioning as an adjective or noun, that is used in the predicate following a copula and describes or is identified with the subject of the sentence.”

What? Poor learner: you're looking for clear answers, but you get a bucketful of gibberish instead and still have no clue.

Confucius: Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated

Why so complicated?

Let's translate the convoluted jargon into something intelligible, like everyday human language.

Sentences are tiny movies: its main character(s) (=Subject) always ARE or DO something (=subject complement).

A helping verb, like am, are, is (= a form of to be), connects the Star(s) of the movie to the information about them.

As simple as that

That's all: information about the Star of the movie. Forget about words like complement, copula or predicate. There's no need to complicate things.

Happy learner: now you can get the message without the gibberish.

Grammar should help, not hinder.
