As I look out at the landscape of the online industry, I can't help but feel a wave of sadness wash over me. We've gotten lost. We've missed the boat and wonder why we feel the way we do. Disconnected. Frantic. On the treadmill. Trying to keep up.?
?
We jump from trend to trend, wishing, hoping,??and praying for a quick fix. Searching for THE thing that will bring us success. Closer to where we want to be. We throw offers and ideas at the wall. We jump on market trends to stay relevant. We abandon ship before we even give ourselves a chance to be successful. We look for gurus and experts to tell us what to do. We wade in the shallows. Treating the symptoms. And we are stressed. We are tired. We are over, keeping up….
?
But the reality is we did this to ourselves. We should'ed ourselves. We staying on the surface instead of wading into the depths. We jumped from thing to thing like a rock skimming the surface when its throw sideways as it bounces across the water….
?
We stay at the surface. We abandon ourselves. We treat the symptoms. We want to get to our destination without putting in the work. We want the end results without the journey. We want the beauty of the view without the ascent of the mountain. We've become addicted to dopamine hits, instant gratification, and expecting instant results. We've become perennially dissatisfied. We've betrayed ourselves in the process. We've created a culture that wades in the shallows and is one step ahead. We've created a culture that bypasses the beauty of what it means to be a human. We've triggered and tricked ourselves into thinking success is just one quick fix away or trend away. And in this process, we've made ourselves anxious. Trying on trend after trend. Thing after thing. Outsourcing our decision-making. Skipping the steps in order to become who we desire to be. Believing that there is some magic wand that brings what we want to us. That the guru knows me more than me. And that I can have what I desire if I follow this formula or get my energy right. All lacking the necessary ingredients to actually live life to the fullest. Depth. Mastery. Journey.?
?
The reality is there is no quick fix to that what you desire. There is now one-size-fits all formula. There is no secret. There is no over, under or around. Only through. It is in the work that you are avoiding. The depth that you are lacking. The journey that you are afraid to take. The root that you aren't treating. The vulnerability you resist.?
?
We are missing depth in this modern world—in online business, in gaining expertise, in being a beginner again. We've lost the art of mastery. Reading a book cannot replace the experience gained on the field of life—in the discomfort of failing, in resilience to move through your fears, in the journey to go from where you are to where you want to be.?
?
The joy we are all seeking is in the journey we are avoiding. In the resilience, we resist building. In the action, we fear to take. In order to master something, we must be able to not only know something but live it, breathe it, integrate it, and embody it. We must become part of it, and it is part of us. We must know it inside and out AND still approach it with the curiosity that there is still something more to learn, to uncover, and to synthesize.?
?
Mastery takes time, commitment, resilience, GRIT, patience, perserverence, failure, vulnerability, and stickuitiveness. Mastery looks effortless from the outside, yet those who have achieved any level of mastery know just how far from effortless that level of mastery was. Simply ask them. It took blood, sweat, and tears. It took a painful transformation. It took a level of transparency that wasn't for the faint of heart. It took exploring your limits. It took countless repetitions. You gave it hours of your life in exchange for that effortlessness. It came with a price. The price of enduring the journey. Showing up when you didn't feel like it. Staying committed on days you were tired.?
?
It is only in this modern era we have tried to outsource or shortcut mastery. The masses seek mastery without effort, but that's not how mastery works. We can try to veil it, but eventually, that veil fades. Looking back through all of time, we can see many examples of mastery - Beethoven and his symphonies. Da Vinci and his paintings. The 7 Wonders of the World. The beauty and craft of early civilizations. Your favorite athlete. Some of the greatest speeches ever written.?
?
Yet in our modern era those who speak don't even write their own speeches. We run a course one and call it complete. We take one course and call ourselves an expert. We work with a coach on our trauma and then call ourselves trauma-informed. This is not how mastery works….it is more than knowledge aquired or the ablity to repeat what someone else has said.
?
And the fa?ade of "mastery" is fading. It's why you see so many launches failing. Courses are not selling. People are hesitant to commit to yet another "guru" who is selling them something from whatever trend they just jumped on or a book they just read. The opportunistic times of pressuring people to buy this new thing you just learned are going extinct.?
?
Our culture is calling out for more. We are missing pieces of ourselves because we are trying to skip the journey. The joy is in the journey on the road to mastery. Anything worth doing in this life requires us to show up, lean in, and do the work. To move through the experience. To endure. This could be growing your business, learning or taking your expertise to a new level, or creating a new offering. There is no one and done in any of these areas. The same goes for our health. We cannot expect some pill to solve our problem. We can't expect to lift weights once and see muscles.?
?
Mastery happens over time. To get to where you want to go is the result of committing to it and showing up. It requires a level of resilience and sticktoitiveness. It requires being a beginner. It requires failing. It requires you to face your fears and embrace them. Get acquainted with them. Befriend them. It requires the courage to claim what you truly want. It requires you to forge a path that most won't wake because they are busy looking for the next thing that will temporarily treat their symptoms. Mastery requires you to swim into the depths. The master requires you to get to the route. To be an active participant in the journey of life. Mastery shows you who you are and what you are capable of. It reduces anxiety, increases confidence, and brings you back to who you were before the world told you what you should do.?
?
It's time we bring back the lost art of mastery.?
