The ability to focus is a skill that is getting more and more difficult with each year.
A recent study by Microsoft found that the human attention span has dropped to just 8 seconds, shrinking nearly 25% in just a few years.
Considering the constant distractions offered by technology and social media, it’s really no surprise that we are really horrible at staying focused. At any given time, we could have texts coming in, notifications from 4 different apps pinging our phones, work messages from Gmail and Slack, calendar reminders, etc. – and that’s not even to mention the all-consuming demands of the actual people in our lives – our children, colleagues, spouses, and friends.
In a world where your phone is constantly within arm’s reach, how are you supposed to ignore these distractions and stay focused? Focusing is a lost art.
Many professional women have become excellent multitaskers. However, multitasking doesn’t really serve you well. It fragments your attention and leads to mental exhaustion and burnout.
Instead of trying to multitask and mentally juggle several things at once, here’s what I suggest:
